The Medical Association opened a conference to-day with 2000 medical men ■present. The opening. ceremonies included Professor Harvey Smith’s presidential address and an impressive religious service. ' Professor Smith in his address stressed the fact that the economic organisation .of'medicine had not kept pace with its scientific progress. He pointed out that 30 per cent, of patients were treated free by physicians. . ■ Professor. Smith advocated a system of health insurance. as the only method by which, competent medical service could be placed within the reach of all on a-satisfactory basis. ■'
