Commenting on the children’s elocutionary classes held on Tuesday, the judge, Mr. J. W. Bailey, stated the competitors were very natural, and that •was what was wanted most. Once they became precocious they would cease to have their childish charm. He had noted very pleasurably the efforts of the parents in the children’s .costume songs, said Mr. W. H. Dixon. The children had good voices, better voices than he had heard since coming to New Zealand, where he found that they •were not getting the advantages they plight. It was a mistake for some choirs to lose children, for in choir work they would gain a knowledge and a love , of music. None of the children he had ; heard was unsuitable for a choir. Mr. Dixon wondered whether the audience ( had noticed how clear the children were ; with words. One competitor had had only a tiny voice, but practically every ( word could be caught. 1 He could not .help remarking, Mr. j Dixon said, on the high standard of pianoforte playing. One competitor, , ' Miss A. Curtis, had secured 87 marks, ] and the highest he had ever given in t New Zealand was 90. ] In the boys’ class there was consider- f ably better singing than at Wellington { last year, “and I would say the same if I was in Wellington,” added Mr. Dixon. { When he had seen that one boy was ( singing “Waiata Poi” he had not thought r a child could manage it, but the com- c petitor, Gordon Smart, had given a clev- } er interpretation. ‘ ; The judge congratulated Hawera on j four good entries in the choir class. It c was something to be proud of that the class was better than it had been at ■, Wellington.’ j He had set a difficult test for read- j ing at sight (piano), and it was right ] up to the standard of big examinations f in Britain.
