FARMERS’ COMPETITIONS
KAIMATA DISTRICT PRIZES. CHAMPION CUP TO MR. THORBY. ——r — * The Kaimata branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union held a euchre party and dance in the district hall 1 last night on the occasion of the presentation of prizes won in the field competitions conducted under the auspices of tho branch and in co-operation with th© fields division of the Agricultural Department. Mr. 11. Jones, chairman of the branch, 'apologised for the small attendance. It • was satisfactory, he said, that entries had been increased, though in swedes they were acutally less. He paid a tribute to Mr. J. M. Smith, of the Department of Agriculture, who had judged the competition. Had it riot been for his interest the competitions would have fallen through long ago. Mr. H. E. Blyde, provincial president for North Taranaki, said it was extremely gratifying to see the interest being'taken in the competitions by farmers. They showed the farmers the best way of producing hay and ensilage and in that way the work was of a great educative value. He aad much pleasure in presenting Blyde brothers’ championship cup for North Taranaki to Mr. W. W. Thorby, together with a miniature cup and a certificate for hillside stack ensilage. Mr; Blyde then presented certificates to the following: Mr. J. Dobson, stack ensilage, I, Mr. F. Bracegirdle 2; Mr. J. Klenncr, earth pit ensilage, 1; Mr. H. Rielly, first in swedes, J. Moratti 1. Gibson Bros. 3.
Mr. Smith congratulated the district on the winning of the championship cup. 3 Mr, Thorby’s stack was outstanding in ' 30 entries, he said, and the general average marks for ensilage were higher than ’ those for any other district, lie wished L the district continued success and increased entries in the competitions, which were of a great educative value. ! He paid a tribute to Mr. Jones (local 1 chairman) and Mr. Klenner (secretary) 1 for the large amount of work they had ■ put into the competitions. Without an enthusiastic chairman they could not succeed. Supper was in charge of Mesdamcs W. E. Smith, F. Adlam, T . Ryan, T. KnolTlock and J. Klenner. A progressive euchre tournament was played. Mrs. F. Adlam won the ladies’ first prize, while a play-off for the second prize between Miss Klenner and Miss Clarke and Mrs. Clarke was won by the first mentioned. Mr. L. Bocock won the men’s first prize, the second being awarded Mr. L. Old after playing f pff with Mr. N. Bracegirdle. Consolation prizes were won by Mrs. Smith and Mr. Bex-Adlam.
