The Orient liner Orontes is among the 16 liners in the world which are insured for more than £1,000,000, says the shipping correspondent of The Times. The White Star Company’s Britannic, which will be insured for £1,200,000, will add the seventeenth when it joins the trans-Atlantic service next month. The highest valued liners at present arc the Bremen and Europa, insured for £1,900,000 each. The Leviathan is insured for £1,640,000. The highest, insured British ships are the Cunard liners Aquitania, Berengaria and Mauretania, • ; at £1,500,000 each. The Majestic, the world’s largest vessel, is insured, for £1,300,000, and the He de France at £1,200,000. Those insured for £1,000,000 consist of the Canadian Pacific Company’s Empress of Canada, the French liner Paris, the Italian liners Vulcania, Saturnia and Augustus, and the Americans California and Virginia. Numerous large liners are valued for insurance at rather less than £1,000,000. STEAMER IN A FIELD. Floods in France played u strange prank with the Saone and a steamer. The Saone is a staid river, slow and discreet, but the floods turned it into the fields. Near Dijon a steamer mistook the river channel and steamed clear away from it into one of the flooded allotments. The steamer stuck in the field and there it had to remain, with no better hope than that a new and heavier flood might lift it out again. Its cargo has been taken out and the vessel will presently become like the scriptural lodge in a garden of cucumbers. P. AND O. AUSTRALIAN SERVICE. After trading to Australia for a number of years the P. and O. liners Naldera and Narkunda will be replaced in the service by the new 21,000-ton liners Strathaird and Strathhaven, which are now' being built. The Naldera and Narkunda will probably be transferred to the London-Bombay-Japan service to replace older vessels. /X number of old vessels from the P. and O. fleet have been sold recently, the last reported sale being that of the Royal Mail liner Morea, which was purchased by Japanese interests for use in the fishing industry. Ships of the same age as the Morea, and at least one—the Macedonia —which is, considerably older, are still in service in the Eastern run. It is stated that replacements will be made with new vessels in some instances, but the release of the Naldera and Narkunda will render a large building programme unnecessary. > SHIPPING TELEGRAMS.
