RACE TRACK EVENTS

' DANNEVIRKE DELIBERATIONS

jHQ FIELDS CARDED FOR TO-DAY.

; (By “Moturoa.”) - JVith Maiiawatu and, Hawke’s .--Bay ’ form as'" a guide the public should not ‘ find the sorting out of winners at the banhevirke meeting to-day a very difficult proposition. Good sized fields are ; yarded for all races, and some good sport should be witnessed. '"/.#■ * » w Proceedings open at 11.45 a.m. with the .Glengarry Hurdles; in which WHAKAUE, who won very easily at i Hastings, is entitled to most respect. !A newcomer to jumping ranks, Juggle, . may worry him most. #;C * * The Tiratu Maiden Stakes looks like • providing a poser for the bettors. Twenty-five have paid up, and they are . a mixed lot. Winners looks the best of the older division, but, of the three-year-olds, Jayson, Laconic, Souchong, Hawkshaw, Dick Whittington and Futurist have all shown pace. However, ’ JAYSON • looks the pick of the bunch. « & * ■»

The big flat race is the Neagle Handicap, ten furlongs. Marjoram is now up fn the weights, and that brilliant but ' unsound, middle-raged performer Hynan- ' na ran well enough at Awapuni after his long spell to suggest that he would need- only to- kep right to win soon. ; Blimp ran his best race for some time when he finished third in the Selwyn ■ Handicap at Riocarton, and he likes the #arly spring tracks. -Black Mint won s,...this race last year on a protest against (Jourageous, but neither has shown much form lately;.'. Of the - lightweights no- ' thing looks more likely than Shrewd, whose win over a sprint distance at Hastings was full " of merit/ Summed up, it looks as .if the places will be filled bv SHREWD, Blimp and Hynanna. « ■ # . ' * ' ' ’ *■;• Simba was the first two-year-old. ton-’ her last season, and then went off ’’Kfter winning, two races brilliantly. . He features in the ‘Umutaoroa- Handicap, Iwith 9.0, and if- he strikes form so ' -quickly again he will- take a, ■ lot of heading off. Taranto raced well in the Autumn and Tripping showed form as ft two-year-old. Quinoid has a chance, • but Acmil has the benefit of a face at Hastings'. Probably- ACMIL, Simba and' -Taranto will carry the bulk of • themoney. ...' A .. # * * . ’ ; In the Hack Steeplechase. Risk is now topweight. He'is very well'just now. Handy is a brilliant jumper for a short distance and is not badly treated. ■ Sir.Moment has a chance "and so has Kovno, but th© rest do not look like proving troublesome. . On-performances HANDY should bo too fast for Risk. > .: • - * ’ They are an even lot in the Presi-' 'dent’s Handicap with two fair performers in Kahikatoa and Jenny Diver at the top of the list. Fi'tzquex also showed form last season. Though . Jenny Diver looks more likely to stay on than her co-marker, a preference must be expressed this time for KAEffKATOA, who had. the benefit of a race on ■Saturday. ■ < # * • * . - * . The Ruahine'Handicap-has drawn a 'fin© field, with Historic at th©-' top of th© .lists carrying a good .horse’s weight. Broad Acre is back to form again, and My Own goes well over .this distance. Lineage may need a race, -but . Royal • Damon -is well • forward. ■ A repetition pf his Riocarton form would give Royal. (Jarno a great chance, but he is a pa>chy. galloper. Maui will not be disgraced, but th© rest do not look dangerous. Historic has not raced since. Easter, ...and. probably the money will be divided among BROAD ACRE, Royal Damon and My Own. ' ? i Th© public will not be - inclined to look very far past .th© topweights in |;he Harris Handicap, and on the -strength of his good second at Tren- ' tham SHORTLY is sure to be in more demand than Kilorell. NEW PYMOUTH TRACKS SOME SMART .WORK YESTERDAY. >i! ’ > (By “Moturoa.”) ' After, the downpour on Sunday it was to be expected that the New Ply- ' inouth tracks would soften, but the going yesterday was really good under th© circumstances, and the. course will peed only a few more days of .fine weather to be in tip-top order for Saturday. ; , Spanish King cantered on the inner. The Merriwee gelding is building up well. ' # * - * * Gibraltar (Eagar) has quite recovered from his throat affection; and'worked on the inner grass. . ' . ’> # * Rapai (O’Brien) and Grech Patch (Cochran) ran home from the tWo-fur-long’nost in 30oec. Green Patch was well clear at the finish. Just John (Brown), Waitaunaha and Nimblefoot (O’Brien), jumped away from the teit-furlohg peg. Just John soon dropped back- and- the other pair kept together, Nimblefoot ■having slightly the better of matters when they passed the post in 2min. Slsec. # * # * Lady Quex (George) cut out the last two of a three-furlong flutter in 27sec. The mare' hit out much better than she has been doing for some time. : ■ # ■ # *= * Orapai (O’Brien) and Tc Atiawa ' ’(Goulsbro) were sent half a mile. The first two furlongs were cut out in 25 2-ssec. and the three-year-old had to be pulled up to a walk to pass the post clear of Te Atiawa in sGsec. ts # fc # Belle Star and Manly were given strong pace-work on the inner. * «= w * Melissa (Rang!) Jumped away from the four furlongs in front of Miss Chatter (McLeod), but the latter shot up fast on the bend and led into the straight. Melissa cam© away again, at the finish and had the better of matters, the journey taking £»3sec. Both mares went very well. * * # • . Moerai-gi (Mr. R.. Topless) gave a bright-.exhibition of jumping over four fences. ♦ # • 1> . . | (jCVPrjen) -wf’Ut .! tlji'fce-.qutir-

Easter Time (Goulsbro) and Lady Lulfi (George) sprinted smartly home from- the, two-furlongs in 27 2-ssec. The two-year-bld was just in front at the finish,. hut J both went freely. -\'; «< .; «= * ■ Gbld Gleam trotted on the inner. ' '■ « « * * ’ . Crennatown (Goulsbro) and Annoyer (George) finished on terms over five furlongs run in Imin. Tsec. Annoyer could have done slightly better. PROMISING MAIbEN HUNTER. The brightest piece of schooling work durinw the morning was registered by Ngawhaa (Brown) and Silvereine (Duggan). The hunters set- off at a solid pace and flew the hurdle at the back. Ngawhaa outpaced his- companion oa the bend and was well clear approaching the double. Both hunters jumped faultlessly and'they came together again'on the bend. Ngawhaa had slightly th© better of matters down the back, but there was not much, between them at the double the second time.-* Here, however, the grey mare was outjumped. Both hunters went extremely well and there was no let-up in the pace, but

Ngawhaa gave a faultless exhibition and showed. too. much pace for the'grey mare. />-. '■ > ';. Royal Finance/ (George) began about four lengths ahead of Screed (Goulsbro). from the'half mile, and’the filly strolled home in 53jscc. She was not asked to do-her best. .■ * ' <=. ■ . * Razor : (Brown) . jujnp?d Hie double. , carefully ..each .time over a couple of ■ rounds on .the steeplechase course. He did not particularly impress. '* • # / Huirangi ..Girl(Duggan)' gave Lady. ; June (Todd) eight lengths start oyer . two furlongs, and -the pair finished on ■ternis; Huirangi'. G.irl running the last, mile in 2mih. 3sec. and the full distance in 2min. 33sec. . a«' « • ■ Side Shot (Goulsbro) e .was picked up . by 'Potency' (George) over the last mile of a ten furlong gallop, but Potency was well clear at' the finish, running 2min. I sec. for liis ta.sk. ■’ "■ . Lady de Reske (0. J. Goulsbro) went a circuit at three-quarter pace. • * ". * . * Puawhato, • (Goulsbro) finished five lengths'ahead of Bay Dighton (George) over a mile run in 2min. Iscc. Pua--whato-must have a show in the Hunters’ Flat Race on Saturday. Sparkling Morn. (McLeod) and, Cornerman (Rangi) cantered around on the inner grass. " * ' * * /. .
