The Director-General of Health, Dr. T. H. A. Valintine, will retire from the service of the department at the end of August, says a Wellington message. He has been granted six months’ leave on full pay. The Minister of Health stated that Dr. Valintine’s services would be retained in an advisory capacity. Ae yet no successor had been appointed. Mr. Jack Cummins, formerly of New Plymouth, has died at Wellington after a severe illness. He was a resident of New Plymouth for 20 years and was bandmaster of the Citizens’ Band for six years. Previously he had been bandmaster of tho Feilding, Lyttelton Marine and Opunake bands, with all of which he had considerable success at contests. Mr. Cummins was in his sixty-fifth year and .’eaves a widow and two sons, Messrs. Joseph and Francis, and two daughters, Mrs. J. A. Barker and Mrs. S. F. Langley.
