ASSAULT ON MOTORIST
SEQUEL TO FREE RIDE. A thief took advantage of a motorist’s generosity to assault and rob him of £27 at Woollahra, Sydney, one night recently. Mr. Sydney Hope, a rent collector, who resides. at Mosman, was driving his motor-car through Woollahra, when a man stopped him and asked for a lift into the city. Mr. Hope acceded to the request. Near the Sports Ground the man told Mr. Hope he was a mechanic, and said there was a defect in the engine which needed a trifling adjustment.
The ear was stopped and the' pretended mechanic occupied himself for a few minutes tinkering with the engine. Then he went behind Mr. Hope’s seat and struck him a savage blow on the head. The driver fell back in his seat, stunned, and remained there more than an hour till he recovered consciousness.
