MOUNT EGMONT ALPINE CLUB. WEATHER MARS TRIP. Rain fell almost incessantly at Dawson Falls hostel on Sunday and kept indoors for most of the day the members of a large party of enthusiasts, who assembled at the hostel at about 9.30 a.m. with the intention of participating in the Mount Egmont Alpine Club’s trip to the ski-ihg grounds on the Stratford Plateau.

The ■ promise of fine weather and the favourable conditions prevailing early in the day had lured about 40 members out, all intent. on the exhilaration of a day’s sport on the snow. Disappointment at the unfavourable weather conditions did not deter the members of the party from enjoying themselves before a cheerful fire in the old house. Games were played, tricks performed and dancing and music enjoyed, whilst in the afternoon a number of the more I venturesome spirits set out on tramping | expeditions up' the ’ new- track to the snow line and along various walks around the hostel. Luncheon and afternoon tea were enjoyed in picnic fashion, the party leaving on the return trip to Hawera about 4.30 p.m. In response to. a request byJUr. R. Syme, club captain, Mr. J. P. Murphy gave a most interesting talk on what to do (and what not to do) in the event of accidents on the mountain, and demonstrated the use of the club’s new stretcher for the transport of injured persons. Mr. Murphy also discussed glissading and pointed out that glissading should be indulged in only when the most favourable conditions obtained. If powdery snow could be swept up easily with the hands a descent could be made with comparative safety. Mr. Murphy explained how to. use an ice axe to check speed when glissading, and concluded his talk by re- | counting some mountaineering experiences in various parts of New Zealand.’ On behalf of the club Mr. Syme thanked Mr. Murphy for the valuable information he had given to members.
