RACING ATxDANNEVIRKE, GOOD ACCEPTANCES' RECEIVED. ■ (By “Paritutu?’) This- week’s racing will include - two days at Dannevirke, the Racing Club providing the sport to-morrow and the Hunt Club on Thursday. Very good acceptances were received oh Friday evening for both fixtures, and racing promises to be interesting throughout. The Dannevirke tracks were in good condition at the week-end, but the change to wintry conditions since then may cause them to be a trifle holding. There is very little money about in the district at present, and it., is anticipated that the Dannevirke clubs, in common with most clubs running meetings in the early spring, will have to face decreasing revenue. The stakes offered, however, are not large, and the Dannevirke folk may get out of the ventures without loss. It is hoped so.

Racing will commence. -at 11.45 a.m. each day, and. to-morrow the first event will be the Glengarry Hack Hurdles, one mile and a-half, for which there are 11 acceptors. Whakaue won so easily -at Hastings on Saturday that he is sure to have a good following here, though opposed to a much better lot of •hurdlers. Call Again is useful, but may be all the better for a race, and Dobbin goes fairly-well in his-.schooling. Whenuatonga- has recovered; from his.- recent mishap, and looks well, but does not seem to. possess great staying powers. It will be hard to go past Whakaue if the five-year-old son of King Mark and Earthshine goes to the post, for he ..haa..only. been, raised GJb for Saturday’s success. .

Twenty-five remain in the ' Tiratu Maiden Stakes, five furlongs, which".may have to be run-in- divisions.. As. usual with thia- claos of events at the beginning of the season, the public will have little or nothing to go on, though Jayson, Masterton and Winacre ran well enough in the autumn to suggest early improvement.

The Neagle Handicap (open), run over a mile and a-quarter, has drawn a nice field of ten. The top-weight, Marjoram, has been working well at Bulls, but has now got a really good horse’s weight, and the bulk of punters may look for the probable winner lower down. Hynanna is flatteringly treated, but seems to be a light of other days. It is only a ehame what he would do to his opponents if he struck form. Black Mint might be dangerous if caught in a galloping mood, but the Riccarton form of Blimp looks more attractive. Courageous won in moderate company at Awapuni recently, and •Shrewd scored in good style at Hastings on Saturday. Possibly Blimp, Shrewd, Courageous and Marjoram will carry the Ibulk of the money on the day, and the most • dangerous of the quartette seem . be,.Piini t> and

The Umutaoroa Hack Handicap, six furlongs, has filled well, seventeen becarded. Simba, the speed merchant of last spring, has earned all of Ost, and should go well-with that impost. Ex Dono is fairly consistent, and Tripping gave promise last season of turning out more than useful. Acmil ran Commander to a head at Hastings last week, andwill appreciate the 121 b drop in weight. Repay, who beat a good field at the same meeting, must have a chance despite a rehandicap of 61b. Simba's quality may tell in the finish, though the form shown last week by Repay and Acmil entitles them to respect.

Highwayman’s defection leaves nine to contest the Dannevirke Hack Steeplechase, two miles and a-half. Risk, having been raised a stone for winning on Saturday, is now topweight, and reads badly compared with Handy, Sir Moment, Kovno and Mandate. There are several fairly stiff obstacles in the Dannevirke steeplechase course, and a bold fencer like Handy should hold a distinct advantage there. Kovno and Sir Moment may go as well as any of the others, but there is every chance of a surprise in this class of event. . . • « « *» Eleven figure in the -President’s Hack Handicap, seven furlongs. Kahikatoa and Jenny Diver represent good class, and Fitzquex and Pat’s Boy have also shown promising form. Kahikatoa has had the advantage of a race, and may be the public’s elect. # * * * The Ruahine Handicap (open), seven furlongs, with fifteen acceptors, should be an interesting event.-Historic has a steadier, 10.3, but is fairly forward and cannot be left out of the reckoning. Marjoram may. start in the longer race, but Broad Acre, My Own, Royal Damon and Accra will be seen- out. Broad Acre’s double win at Awapuni was very ■ impressive, and there is no doubt that he is a greatly improved horse. My Own is said to 'be very well at present, and Acora'is coming on with every gallop. My Own may be the actual favourite. The day’s, racing will conclude with the' Harris Hack Handicap, one mile. The field of eight is a poor one, with the exception' of Shortly and Arrow-head,-and the public should have little hesitation in tackling it if this pair go to the post. JOTTINGS. The Manawatu horseman, A. Jenkins, has been engaged to ride Maidos and Pikimai at the' Taranaki Hunt meeting, -states the Manawatu Standard. Jenkins is none the worse for his experience'■"at Riccarton, where • Diana’s “ Lad fell-with him each day. ® • * * Last spring Black Mint won the Neagle Handicap at Dannevirke, and was followed home by Courageous. The race was run at a muddling pace, taking 2min 16 4-ssec, and they . will need to travel faster to-morrow to be in the money. • 0 -• • The open seven furlongs race at the same meeting fell to the aged Tribulation gelding Huikar, who* beat Dobbin • and Nucleus, now hurdlers. T’iuthair was the topweight,- carrying 9.12, but she made a disappointing showing. Two very fair horses accounted for the divisions of the Tiratu Maiden at Dannevirke last spring, Tahoma (Hunting Song—Kowerewcre) and Blue Paper (Paper Money—Blue Lake) romping home in their respective heats. Of the lot which contested the maiden there last year Air Laddie, Don Quixote, Potoaform, Grattus and Duellona have also done; well, but quite a number are stilt in maiden ranks.

Considering that most of the best handicap horses are absent in Australia, and many will be there through the spring meetings, the entries received for the New Zealand Cup are very satisfactory. Nightmarch, Concentrate, Star Stranger, Count Cavour, Hunting Cry, Merry Damon, Bright Glow, Mendip and Count Palatine are notable entrants, and there is every prospect of a first-class-field contesting the. two-miles handicap in November. No doubt, it is a sign- of the times that, there is an almost total absence of “rubbish” from this year’s nomination list.

Declining totalizator figures are practically general, and clubs racing in the spring of this season appear to be im for a very lean'time. The shrinkage is most noticeable in the country districts, as might be expected with the low prices ruling for primary- products, but .it is also reflected at Ellerslie and at Riccarton/though to a slighter extent. While on the subject, a suggestion comes from Otago that clubs should (as a protest against increased taxation) take the war into the enemy’s camp by reducing cards to seven races a day. This looks like cutting off one’s nose to spite the face, and will not appeal to sportsmen, who should be the last toput obstacles in the way of fighting the present depression. Money might easily be raised for the unemployed and for other necessitous purposes by run-, ning “charity meetings,” and it is up to everyone t'o put his shoulder to the wheel. v-
