FAREWELL AT LOWGARTH

MR. AND MRS. FRED oHALL. , RESIDENTS • FOR 55 YEARS. In conjunction, with the social held by the Lowgartli Farmcra’ Union tor the presentation of the field competition prizes on Thursday evening a farewell was tendered by the residents to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hall, who are leaving the district for Eltham after residing in Lowgarth for many years,. In asking Mr. Hall to accept a cheque as a token of their esteem Mr. J. L. Taylor said that the residents felt they could not let them depart without this tangible expression of their wishes. Mr. Hall had been in the district for a. great number of years and all regretted that he and his family were leaving. He had been a good farmer and a helpful resident and such they could ill afford to lose. He wished them success. Mr. A. T. : Sulzberger'said he had known Mr. Hall for about 25 years and he had always found him a good friend and neighbour. Mr. A. D. Johnson also spoke. .. Mr. F.‘ Willan said Mr. Hall had been a generous contributor to all local causes and he had done much to help the various activities of the district. In reply Mr. Hall eaid he was very pleased to be the guest of the Lowgarth Farmers’ Union, of which he had been a - member for many, years.' GENERAL ITEMS. The Taranaki primary ,schools’ representative Rugby team left by the mail train yesterday to take part in a schools’ representative tournament to be held in the Hutt Valley. The boys vzere under the charge of Messrs. L. JFurrle and V. J. Henderson, Stratford.

A dance will be held at Pukengahu, organised by the Pukengahu Social Club, on Monday evening. There will not be many more. dances this season and this one should be well worth attending.

The following Eltham ladies’ hockey team- will meet Rovers at Hawera today: R. I’otta, P. Wy'lds, E. Smith, M. Taylor, L. Potts, A. Foote, B. Walker, M. Gower, R. Townsend, P. Clare, I. Thomas.

At the Lowgarth Farmers’ Union’s presentation of prizes on Thursday an outline of the women’s division’s progress was given by Mrs, W. E. Carter, who mentioned that since the last conference 20 new branches had been formed. The division was of great value in assisting the men’s union, she said. The prize-winners at the Eltham Anglican Church euchre party on Thursday w ere Mrs. Peacock and Mrs. Walsh, Mr. J. Scott and Mr. Martin. Consolation awards were made to Mrs. MacDonald and Mr. C. Gibbons. . In judgment summons proceedings Albert New was at the Manaia Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered to pay to Minimax, Ltd., £7 10s Gd and costs 15s Gd, in default seven days’ imprisonment. The same defendant was ordered to pay T. G. Thompson £1 16s, in default two days’ imprisonment. ■ There was a good attendance for the dance at the Kahouri Bridge Hall on Wednesday evening, visitors being present from Stratford, Toko, Pembroke Road, Wharehuia, Te Popo and Puken.galiu. Waite’s orchestra supplied the dance music, extras being played by Miss Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Marsh. Miss Chard and Mr. H. Webby won the balloon dance and Miss P. Neilsen and Mr. B. Neilsen the Monte Carlo. Mr. Clarridge was master of ceremonies. ' ELTHAM THEATRE. “In Old Arizona," first all-talking drama to be made in feature length by Fox Movietone will screen at the above theatre tonight.
