Though he had been earning good wages, bad luck had dogged him for many years, said the bankrupt at a meeting of creditors in New Plymouth yesterday. It began from the time he built a dwelling himself, but he built it on another man’s property, had no title to it and received only £5 for it. His family was buying a car but. one of his boys smashed it when practising for his license. “I wish I had filed earlier,” said bankrupt. “We have practically always had a ‘bluey’ in the house for the past 15 years.”

An eye specialist was being asked in the Supreme Court yesterday to affirm that men in certain occupations would not lose in ability when deprived of one eye. “For instance,” suggested counsel, “my learned friend would be just as good a lawyer with one eye as he is with two?” Soon afterwards the crossexamination was commenced. “Yes, I might be just as good a lawyer, but I •would not be so one-eyed as some people we know,” said the other barrister on rising to put his questions. “Ha, very good!” acknowledged his- opponent, laughingly. Then he pulled his watch from his pocket. “But he took five minutes to think of that’one,” he added. A man had a narrow escape at Newton King, Ltd’s, garage, Inglewood, yesterday morning. Three of the staff, Messrs. R. Coles (manager), C. Evans and M- Lindsay were throwing old tonneau seats from the top of the office to the concrete floor below. As one was being thrown it caught in Mr. Cole’s coat and pulled him over with it. As Mr. Coles fell Mr. Evans made a fruitless effort to catch him, but Mr. Coles with a great effort flung his arms around one of the rafters. The motor body tore away from his coat and fell to the "round and left him suspended from the rafters. Had he fallen to the concrete floor of the garage he would probably have been seriously injured.

The discussion concerned a corner.. An expert witness in the Supreme Court yesterday had expressed the opinion that this particular bend in the road was very tricky for the motorist. It was necessary to take special care alter leaving the cant and coming on to the camber, he said; otherwise there was a likelihood of the car leaving the line of the curve and travelling in a straight line towards the centre of the road. I am not an expert, but just an ordinary motorist,” said cross-examining counsel “Would it surprise you to know that I have passed that corner safely a thousand times without taking any precautions,” The reply was as prompt as it was pointed. "That is quite likely, said the expert. “Unfortunately there are a good many motorists like you on the roads to-day.”
