CORRESPONDENCE
THE RUGBY PLAY-OFF. (To the .Editor.) Sir,—l notice with great surprise the reason givven by Mr. J. McLeod, chairman of the Taranaki Rugby Union, why he could not support the senior playoff being held at Eltham, viz., that the Eltham business men had refused to 'close one Saturday on the occasion of the British-Taranaki match at New Plymouth. Surely he did not logically' expect Eltham and Havvera’ business men to close their businesses on the best day of the week because of a football match at New .Plymouth. Would Mr. McLeod have had the effrontery to advocate that New Plymouth -business houses should close on a Friday (their busy day) if-the match was ,to be played at Eltham or Ha-wera? No, Ido not think so. Has New Plymouth , ever closed for anything outside “New Ply-,, mouth,”, such as a Taranaki band contest or other important event? Air. McLeod’s policy seems to be, “if business interferes with football then give up business —for all places outside New Plymouth.” No, Air. AlcLeod is becoming warped in his vision, and it is time he gave way to a more reasonable man to lead ■ Rugby in Taranaki. Perhaps this partly explains why Taranaki people are losing interest in' football, and the game-is diminishing in popularity. Air. AlcLeod should try to broaden out a bit for the good of the good old game. —I - am, .etc.. ANTI-DRIFT.
