LARGE SUM INVOLVED. PAPER SUBSTITUTED. A large sum of money, which was ostensibly sent from the branch of the National Bank at Lismore, New South Wales, to th© Sydney office, recently disappeared. The amount involved is believed to be £5OO, in notes of large denominations. Following the usual practice, a large sum of money was sealed in a registered packet to Sydney. Officials of the bajtik took delivery of the package on its arrival in the city and it is said that it showed no ©igns of having been interfered with. The Lismore seals w ere still intact. On opening the package, however, it was found to contain worthless paper. The matter was reported to the postal authorities and inquiries wer© made. Shortly afterwards, however, the bank again communicated with the Post Office and stated that it was makina its own investigations into the disappearance of the money and that thv inquiry wa© purely a bank matter. It was not alleged that the money had been lost in transit. Endeavours were made to keep the loss of the money a close eccret and officials of the bank both at Lismore and Sydney were instructed .not to comment on the occurrence. It was stated, on behalf of the Lismore poet office, that the packet was banded in bearing the bank’s seal and was dealt with in tlie usual way, which included retention in a locked cage in the office until despatched.
