FUNCTION AT. HILLSBOROUGH. i ■ ■ ; ■ JI■ ENJOYABLE SCHOOL PROGRAMME. A very successful end-of-term social and dance was held in the Hillsborough Hall last night, the pupils of the school providing a most enjoyable programme. There was a largri attendance. The first half of ; the evening was arranged in such a way that a dance succeeded each item, while after supper dancing continued until a late hour. The children’s items were well done and much enjoyed. The teachers, Mrs. I. A. E. Balsom and Miss D. Niccol,- who prepared the,.children for the evening, must have spent considerable time in coaching them, for the whole programme was exceedingly well done. Most of the items were pupils’ community songs and were well received, but the duet by Gwen Guildford and .Eric Barriball, two of the smaller children, was very fine and was generally considered the gem of the evening. The programme was divided, a dancebeing followed by an item from the children' of the school. These were: — “Cheery” song by<the: 'pupils; Polly Wolly Doodle' in/2(-parts; duct, Falling Loaves,” by Gwen Guildford and Eric Barriball; song by the pupils, “Bring Baek My Bonny”; song by the juniors, “Will you Marry Me”; recitation, “Wishes,” by Marianne Bishop;' song by pupils, “Long, Long Ago”; song.by. a quintet of boys, B. Stanley, S. Colson, P. Tui, O. Balsom and D. Marsh, “Alohe Oe.” The girls of the district then presented a one-act play entitled “Concerning the Car,” the parts being taken by Misses Niccol, L. Sampson, D. Briggs, V. and E. Stanley. Before the finish . .of the dance the Hillsborough district winners in the North Taranaki division of the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club competiti ns were given their prizes by Mr, A. IS. Washer, who complimented the children upon the result of the season’s work. Mr. Washer referred to the imminent departure of Mr. Ridling, who had played a prominent part in fostering the club competitions, and said what a great loss he would be to Taranaki, and how sorry the people felt in losing such a keen man.- The winners were: Mangold growing, group 3, Ivy Upson, 1; condition of competition pedigree Jersey, N. Sampson 1, H. Marsh 2. The school committee, which handled the arrangements, included Messrs. F. W. Stanley (chairman), E. J. Bishop, A.J. Hale, H. C. Sampson and E. C. Stanley (secretary). Supper was provided by ladies of the district. The master of ceremonies was Mr. F. Rothery, music for the dancing being supplied by Mrs. Davie-t (piano) and Mr. Davies (violin).
