BOXING IN TARANAKI

THE DONOVAN—LECKIE BOUT. The facts that Johnny Leckie defeatd Donovan when tho pair met at lapier some time ago after Donovan sad secured qjear-cut victories over Pete larron, and that Pete Sarron has since lowered the colours of the redoubtable Johnny Leckie are causing great inter- / ?st to be taken in the return bout between the pair at New Plymouth on Saturday evening, September 6. The ’jout between the pair at Napier proved uch an epic struggle that there is cerain to be a large contingent from Hawke’s Bay, particularly as it is.the evening of the Hawke’s Biay—Taranaki Rugby match. The Taranaki association, however, is making preparations to cater for a huge crowd. The Opera House is not available and the bout will be staged in the Coronation Hall. While this means additional expense in preparation it has tho advantage that it will accommodate a much larger crowd. To provide adequate seating accommodation the committee has had plans prepared for raised seats. The box plan will be at Collier’s,

A meeting of the. committee was held last night, there being present Messrs. Jas. Garcia (chairman), W. N. Stephenson, B. Hume, J. Horlor, A. F. Aldie, G. A. Clarke, R. Harvey, W. Roebuck and P. E. Stainton (acting secretary). The match committee has arranged half a dozen splendid preliminary bouts, including one or two special ones. Mr. Earl Stewart will be the referee. Advice was received from Johnny Leekic that he is in splendid condition and will arrive in New Plymouth a few days before the bout. Mr. E. Griffith was elected a member of the association. The remits to be dealt with at the annual conference of the New Zealand Association, which opens at Palmerston North to-morrow, were discussed and the delegate given a free hand. The chairman submitted a report on the conference held at Stratford between the three Taranaki associations regarding the recent amateur championship tournament, which showed a loss of about £5O, and it was decided to pay the association’s quota. Messrs. R .Furze (Waitara), E. Griffin (Hawera) and D. Roebuck (New Plymouth), who will represent Taranaki at the New Zealand amateur boxing championships, motored to Palmerston yesterday. They were accompanied by Mr. C. E. Roebuck (New Plymouth), who is in charge of the party, and Mr. Henderson. D. Roebuck and E. Griffin represented the province in the New Zealand championships at Greymouth last year, Roebuck being runner-up in the flyweight, a cut over the eye preventing his contesting the final, whilst E. Griffin went under to the champion

in his class (middle-weight). R. Furze has not previously visited the championships but many who have seen him box expect him to return with championship laurels. : ;•
