TOWN BOARD AFFAIRS. The monthly meeting of the Kaponga Town Board was held on Tuesday evening, when Messrs. R. A. Law (deputychairman), E. L. Abbott, J. P. Gibson and A. J. Herbert were present. A letter was received from the secretary of the Kaponga Athletic Club stating that his club owed the board a percentage . of the gate takings for the use of Victoria. Park, amounting to approximately £l2. His club suggested that this amount, together with a similar; amount from his club, be expended on terrace work on the western side of I the park as a means of providing re-' j lief work for a number of unemployed. The suggestion was adopted by the (board, Messrs. Herbert and Abbott being appointed to consult with the writer in carrying out the work. An application for the use of vacant ground on the eastern side of Victoria I Park was received from Mr. A. Melville ! and granted under the usual conditions. A letter was received from the Department of Health inquiring if the board had appointed the Government inspector of health, Mr. R. Gooding, El1 tham, as its health officer and sanitary (inspector for the year. The electrical engineer’s report stated that both power houses operated continuously and without trouble. A total of 29,020 units were generated by No. 2 power house, compared with 30,060 for the previous month. • No purchase of bulk power was made. The work of rendering the reticulation safe and trouble-free had been pressed forward by changing defective poles, cross-arms [and high tension fuses, and by cutting I back trees in al] parts of the area. A start was made with reconstructing a particularly bad line termination at Awatuna. GENERAL ITEMS. A very pleasant function took place on Saturday evening, when the players and manager of the third grade football team were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Fever at a complimentary dinner given in honour of the success gained by the team in having won al) matches in the division this year, Mr. J. Bennie, manager of the team, presided over a , full muster of team members. I The final euchre party and ping-pong j tournament of the winter season under , the auspices of the Anglican Church was held in the parish hall on Tuesday even- ; ing. ’There was a large attendance. Over . 30 players took part in the euchre under I the supervision of Messrs. E. ■ Blackwell

and R. M. Arnold. The ping-pong tournament was held after supper. The prizewinners for the euchre were Mrs. G. J. Lewis and Mrs. J. Lilly, Mr. J. H. Tyaek and Mr. G. Lilly. The floor was then cleared for dancing. Music was supplied by Mrs. Evans and Mr. J. H. Melville was master of ceremonies. Meanwhile the ping-pong tournament was being held under the. charge of Messrs. R. Jef coate and Jim Hammersley. It resulted in Mrs. T. J. Hammersley winning the ladies’ competition and Mr. B. Hammersley the men’s. The pointe prizes for the season’were wen by Mrs. 1 J. H. Tyaek and Mr. A. O’Neill.
