INCREASED TIMBER DUTY
MERCHANT EXPRESSES OPINION, By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Aug. 13. The opinion of timber merchants and others is that the new duties will have the effect of increasing the cost of building, and, incidentally, . the cost of living.* One merchant doubted the wisdom of raising the rates on. large-sized and long timber which, he said, New Zealand must import. Certain classes of imported timber might be. eliminated from buildings, but where it .had to he used the extra duty ; ..would be passed 08.
