PUBLIC SERVICE PENSIONS

ASSOCIATION IN QUANDARY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. . Under the existing financial and political circumstances the Association of Superannuated, Public Servants is in rather a quandary as to the wisest course to pursue to bring about removal of anomalies in the various schemes of superannuation. At the annual meetii g to-day the presdient, Mr. G. G. Girl-ing-Bu tcher, said representations had been made to the late Sir Joseph Ward that a Royal Commission should be set up to investigate and report upon the anomalies that existed in connection with the various schemes of superannuation. The reply given by the late Prime Minister that some form of an inquiry would be held was generally regarded as satisfactory. Before the necessary steps could be taken to set up the commission the Prime Minister had had in contemplation, however, he was stricken with the illness from which he did not recover and another quasi-departmental committee of inquiry was set up by the acting-Primo Minister. “It must be admitted,” the president added, “that so far the position is anything but satisfactory. It appears certain that just at present we cannot expect questions, which however deeply interestmg to us as retired public servants are not of vital importance to the existence of any Government, to receive that amount of attention to which we consider they are entitled. As matteis are at present it would appear not only futile but probably detrimental to our interests in the future if further immediate steps were taken to press upon a badly-harrassed Government our just and legitimate claims.”
