Hard forward struggles ensued, Ngatiruanui working back to over halfway, where Tuki missed with a. penalty kick. Continuing the attack Ngatiruanui compelled a force. Pokau and Toro attempt-/ ed a breakaway, losing the ball when near the corner. Robinson made a daring run assisted by C. Hohaia and Wineera, who reached the corner, where Ngaia saved beautifully by a short punt to utoeii. From the line-out Malcolm kicked, Dixon, Campbell and others dashing to the corner, where things looked dangerous until VVineera relieved with a good punt.. Kicking along the line brought Ngatiruanui to the corner where Whareaitu dived over and scored, Tuki missed with the kick. .Taranaki worked along the line to the twenty-five where a free-kick came to Ngatiruanui. A vigorous rush by Edwards and others was stemmed when Pokai kicked, but the onslaught was soon renewed. Back passing movements by Taranaki were rendered futile owing to the collaring by the Ngatiruanui forwards. Awahou surprised the field by a sudden dash from a scrummage, but when he kicked out the ball came to Harrison, who played safely. Harrison was unable to do any good when he received a penalty kick at half-way. Another shot was taken by-Harrison as an offside penalty, but this also missed. After a series of penalties Wineera dashed away but was not supported by the backs. Taranaki continued on the aggressive but was unable to penetrate

the sound defence. To resist a counterattack T. Robinson marked and found the line. From a scrum Malcolm broke away' with the ball at foot, carrying play to the twenty-live line, where hard tussles ensued, the first spell ending with the score three to nil in favour of the holders.

Ngatiruanui led off with a vigorous struggle to the line, where Tito crossed, taking the ball from Ike. Tuki was unable to convert the try. Wineera started off again and passed to Harrison, who attempted to pot a goal when in front of the posts but nrssed. Further aggressive moves were countered only when Tito marked in front of the posts. Ngaia and Toro dashed down the field, the latter being swung into touch. Armstrong had to retire and his replacement by Tai wae objected to by opposing supporters. Pakera eventually went on the field. Several good passing runs were started by Taranaki, but on each occasion the'smothering tactics of Ngatiruanui overwhelmed the movement. From a penalty near halfway R. Hohaia made a well-directed kick but the length was insufficient. Awarded a penalty Harrison kicked a beautiful goal from an angle, reducing Ngatiruanui’s lead to three points. Play till the finish consisted of a series of scrambles with Ngatiruanui forcing the attack. The game ended with the scores: Ngatiruanui 6 Taranaki 3 Mr. J. F. Kiley refereed.
