WORK FOR THE MONTH. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The monthly meeting of the Patea County Council yesterday received the ( following report from the engineer, Mr. L. F. Row:— Kapara Riding—Satisfactory progress is being made with the contracts on the lower Waitotara Valley Road and it is expected that except for short papa sec- , tions the whole of the formation. woik ’ will be completed by the end of. the • month. A start has been made with the surveys for the coming season’s formation programme. One contract has been completed on the Matemate Road and other contracts are progressing satisfactorily. Mpumahaki Riding. —The new cuivert at Verrv's on the Valley Road has been completed and several broken culverts have been renewed on the Mangawhio Road. Sanding and claying have been done on Brewer s Road and on the lower Okotuku Road. A short length of the Okotuku Road has been metalled with shell rock. Waverley Riding—Foundation borings have been made at the site of the proposed' new bridge at Karahaki, and from the information so gained it appears advisable to erect a long span on hard wood piles to replace the old structure. Plans for this work will be. commenced immediately.. Shell rock metalling is being done on the lower Moturoa Road and on the Division Road. Two low sections of the Kohi Road have been filled with a sand-clay mixture, and the drains on the road behind the Rangikura Station have been cleared. Otoia East.—Sand has been carted to assist the consolidation of stone chips on Kaharoa Road and sections of metal on Bremer’s and Hukatere Roads have been top-dressed with stone chips. Otoia West. —Metal patching iias been done on Ball Road, lower Taumaha Road and Petch Road, and the shoulders of the bitumen surface in the Alton Gorge have been made up. With the assistance of the railway maintenance gang the approaches to 'the Manutahi railway crossing have been cut back to improve the visibility. Approximately 60 feet of 4ft diameter concrete pipes has been salvaged from the old filling in the Alton Gorge. General maintenance work has been carried "out on the main road. Mr. G. V. Pearce wrote regretting that, although the work on main roads was subsidised by the Highways Board, rates had not been reduced. As that was the case he expressed the hope that back-country roads would be attended to, especially • the Otoia Gorge. A similar letter was received from another settler in the district. It was decided to reply that the Otoia Gorge would be considered when the estimates were under review. The Waitotara County Council wrote with reference to the complaints about unlicensed Maori dogs near the Waitotara township. • •/ ■ The clerk reported the dog , tor had informed him that the owners , of the dogs all resided in the Waitotara County. The Patea Plunket Society wrote , thanking the council for the use of a , room for’meetings during the past year. ] A complaint .from residents of Manu- 1 tahi that motorists speeded past the l school was referred to Mr. Watt and ( the engineer. < The engineer stated the programme of work on the main road would include ] the re-sealing of six miles, the wideh- j ing of four miles, and' the light-sealing s of portion,? already widened. t
