The course was slow after the recent rainfall, but the steeplechase track was in great order. The Grand National provided a much better contest than seemed probable at one stage. Five of the eight competitors got round, giving a good exhibition of jumping, and the interest was sustained till about half a mile from home, after which Aurora Borealis always looked a winner. Her success was very well received. For the opening event, the Hunters’ Hurdles, West Dome and Thurina were scratched, the former having another engagement. Airforce was backed to a short price. Star Stranger 11. took the lead at the start and'after going two furlongs had Airforce, Peterette and Akbar as her nearest attendants.. Barrington joined the leader at the six. l furlong post, where Airforce was third. The two leaders were ten lengths clear rounding the turn. Barrington had the measure of Star Stranger 11. at the last hurdle and won comfortably by a good neck. Gold Mint finished strongly ten lengths away to get third by a head from Peterette, who beat Airforce by a neck. The winner, who hails from South Canterbury, is a smart grey, who has won over country. Star Stranger 11. is improving. Gold Mint will win when ho learns to jump right.

, LLYN DU'S GOOD' DISPLAY. Disrank was scratched for the Trial Hurdles. Llyn du just headed Zippor for favouritism. Deluge led past the stand, followed by Zippor, Rigoletto and Exide. The last-named soon lost his place and fell at the mile post, where Deluge was well clear of Zippor and Gay Fashion. A little further on Zippor joined Deluge, with Gay Fashion handy. Gay Fashion led Deluge to the straight, where Zippor was done with. Llyn Du and Gay Fashion jumped the last hurdle together, and then Paris joined in. Llyn Du was going well, however, and he beat Paris decisively by half a length, with Gay Fashion half a length away and Deluge four lengths further back. Llyn Du gave a good display and will win open hurdle races. RASOULI LOOKS A GOOD ONE. The fifteen starters for the Cashmere Plate included nine three-year-olds, but they did not prove up to the necessary standard, the older division filling the places. Charmeuse just headed Gustavo for favouritism, while four others topped four figures. Painkiller and Gustavo led Kakara to the course proper, Sleipner, Rasouli, Air Laddie and Charmeuse being handy. Rasouli shot to the front below the distance, where Painkiller and Gustavo were in trouble, while Air Laddie and Charmeuse moved up a little further on. Rasouli won as he liked from Air Laddie, who beat Charmeuse by nearly two lengths. Then came Kakara, followed by Miss Bradbury, while Swiftray, Gustavo and Painkiller were next after a gap. Rasouli won like a good horse. WEST DOME IMPRESSES. Omeo, Jen and Exide were scratched for the Jumpers’ Flat Handicap. King’s Jest was a solid favourite. West Dome took charge at the start. Shipshape, Membo and Troilus following him for half the journey, when Aberfeldy and King’s Jest also joined in. West Dome was well clear turning for home and won easily by two lengths from Aberfeldy, who took second place at the entrance to the straight. Membo was nearly two away, while Shipshape was four lengths further back. King’s Jest faded out badly in the run home. Carinthia was last most of the way, but finished on well. The performance of West Dome was impressive, ajjd as he jumps hurdles and country well he should have a bright future. THE BEST STEEPLECHASER. Lord Ranald was scratched for the Grand National Steeplechase, his trainer declining to risk a breakdown. Aurora Borealis? on whom H. Dulieu eventually had the mount, was a sound favourite. Valves led over the first fence, but nearly fell. Kapuna showed the way to Snowfall and Valves out of the straight, with Aurora Borealis next, while Wharncliffe had tailed off already. Corneroff took fourth place in the back stretch and joined Kapuna in the lead at the Kennels double, with Snowfall and Valves next, while Omeo was moving up. Kapuna led over the sod wall, but fell at the top of the straight—a fence which has brought him down in other races'. Wharncliffe also fell here. Omeo then , took the lead. Valves lost. his rider at the next fence, the one which nearly settled him at theater |.j.Omea

led down the straight and was several lengths, in front at. the stand double. Corneroff was second at- this stage, and he led to the back stretch with Omeo and Matu handy. Aurora Borealis was just'behind Corneroff and Omeo at the Kennels double, with Snowfall and Matu not far away. Corneroff led over the sod wall, but Aurora Borealis headed him at the top of the straight. This was the end, Aurora Borealis beating Corneroff by five lengths without any trouble., Omeo was fourth lengths away

and Matu was some distance back. Aurora Borealis gave a fine display of . jumping and. clearly .is the best steeplechaser of the' season. Oornerbff ran a great race, jumping well. Omeo failed to stay, as did Matu, who was done, with five furlongs from home, up to which point he was going well. RADIAC SHOWS UP HIS FIELD. Radiac was a hot' favourite for the EnfieldSteeplechase arid his backers were not anxious for long. < Taramoa and Diana’s Lad led over the initial fence and were well’ clear approaching the first of the Kennels double, where they blundered, Diana’s Lad falling. There was not much between Radiac, Taramoa and Double Soult at Cutt’s fence, but Radiac then went to the front and made an exhibition of his opponents. His jumping as usual was high class, and he won pulling up by ten lengths from Taramoa, with Kaikahu 15 lengths away and Parader close up. Double Soult was in second place when he fell at the top of the straight. Radiac is a great jumper and has never been so well. .THE OPPOSITION SMOTHERED. , Staghunter was heavily backed for the Winter Cup, for which Tourist, Marjoram and Arch Arrow were scratched, leaving a field of 19. Arikinui and Staghunter were smartest out, while Toxeuma, Havering, Starshooter and Ranelagh were others prominent. Nancy Lee moved up fast after going two furlongs, and half a mile from home Best Friend also put in an appearance. Staghunter and Arikinui were done with at the home turn. Nancy Lee and Starshooter led to the straight, where Starshooter retired. Toxeuma then put in his claim and soon had the race at his mercy. He was clear at the distance and 'beat Nancy Lee. easily by three lengths... Havering was two lengths away, with Ranelagh and Taboo next, while Rascal headed the others after a gap. Royal Opera was last. Toxeuma’s performance was high class as he smothered the opposition. Staghunter failed to stay, and Best Friend retired

quickly after putting in an effort half a mile from home. Nancy Lee ran a solid race and so did Havering, while Ranelagh was staying on. Toxeuma’s weight is the highest ever carried by a winner of this race. ON TOP SHOWS IMPROVED FORM. Grattus, Lord Thomond and Charmeuse were the scratchings for the Avonhead Handicap, which attracted 14 runners, including a number of smart hacks. Hunting Call and Desert Song carried the big money. Portray was first out, followed by Desert Song, while On Top soon rushed lip to third. Grand Acre joined Portray in the lead at the end of two furlongs, with On Top and Desert Song next, followed by Hunting Call. When the straight was reached Grand Acre retired. On Top shot out at the distance and beat Portray easily by two lengths, with Desert Song a length away, half a length in front of Hunting Call. Then came Compris, finishing on well. The winner showed treat improvement on his form at the Christchurch Hunt meeting, where he failed after showing speed for five furlongs. He looked now like being pretty good. Rapina lost her rider soon after the start. handicaps for second day. Christchurch, Last Night. (By “Moturoa.”) After Eden Hall (Quin Abbey—Toll Gate) won the Canterbury Handicap on July 31 Mr. TrautwCen sold him to a Queensland buyer. Eden Hall had won four races for his Sydney owner, but 'withal had not been a profitable proposition. . o ■» « « Quoted at a good price for second favourite, Becalmed (Chief Ruler —Gipsy Gold) scored nicely in 1 the first division of the Nursery Handicap at Canterbury Park. Full Measure (Surveyor —Thurenie)) ran a fair second in the second division and Becalmed (Nassau —Gipsy Martian) was responsible for a good third in the Campsie Handicap. tt * o' New Zealanders had matters pretty welj, to themselves in the Warwick August Handicap at Warwick Farm on August 2. In The Shade (Australian Sun —Violet II.), ridden by R. S. Bagby, scored by a length and a half from Becalmed, with Lord Romeo (Romeo — Agnestes) a head away. J. T.
