PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORTS

KEEN INTEREST AROUSED. PRESENTATIONS AT OHANGAI. School sport was not receiving the support it merited in the school of Mere Mere, Ohangai, Mokoia and Whakamara. That was the opinion of a committee of residents representing the four districts who met several months ago to formulate a scheme for encouraging sport in those schools. The outcome of the meeting was that two cups ’were presented for competition between the four schools, that for the football being presented by Mr. G. Williams, while the combined committee presented that for the basketball.

A series of matches was played throughout last season. The games were followed with the keenest interest by both parents and friends. of the pupils. An excellent standard of play was maintained, some very keen contests being witnessed. One pleasing feature was very noticeable through the competitions—all matches were played in true sporting fashion, with no vestige of rough play. The honour of winning both cups fell to Ohangai. In the basketball the Mere Mere school was the runner-up, while at the end of the competition .Ohangai and Whakamara were equal in Rugby and a play-off was necessary to decide the competition. The cups are now to be held by Ohangai school until next season, when they will be again competed for. The chairmen and secretaries of the school committees are: Ohangai, Mr. P. Sheehan; Mere Mere, Messrs. G. Williams and J. Millar; Mokoia, Messrs. D. S. Richardson and W. Marsh; Whakamara, Mr, J. Dobson. The teachers, to whom much of the success of the corppetitions was due, are Mrs. Sangstcr and Miss Guppy (Ohangai), Mr. R. Gardner (Mere Mere), Mr. H. Kibblewhite (Mokoia), Mr. H. Buchanan (Whakamara). PRESENTATION OF CUPS. The presentation of the two cups took place in the Ohangai hall on. Friday night, when there was. present one of the largest gatherings ever seen in that i hall. The gathering of adults and children was representative of the four districts and numbered fully 309 —a tribute to the popularity of the competitions. During the early part of the evening an excellent concert programme was provided by the children and friends from the district and Hawera, after which the presentation took place. Mr, G. Williams welcomed the visitors from other districts, saying this was the first occasion on which the four districts had combined to give a function of the kind. He outlined the origin and organisation of the competitions and said ho was very pleased with the support given it by the general public. He presented the basketball cup to the captain of the Ohangai team, Miss C. Trilford, congratulating her and her team on their success.

Mr. D. Richardson presented the Williams Cup to the winning football team, stating that he hoped the would do their utmost to retain the trophy in future years. Master J. Frahm, who, Mr. Richardson said, was undoubtedly the mainstay of the team, received the cup on behalf of Ohangai. Mr, J. Dobson (Whakamara) also spoke, thanking the people of other districts for the receptions they had given Whakamara teams at each school.

Mr. Sheehan, replying on behalf of tho Ohangai teams, said that his first duty was to thank the coaches, Miss E. Patchell (basketball) and Mr. N. Lee and S. Savage (football), for their untiring efforts. . To them the Ohangai teams owed much of their success in the competitions. All must have been well pleased to see the sporting spirit displayed by the teams, and he hoped this spirit would continue through future years. Cheers were exchanged by the teams.

The first portion of tho programme was provided by the children of the various schools. The items were: Part song, “Marseillaise,” Ohangai children; recitation, Miss A. Williams, J. Williams, M. Bloor and Master W. Gardner (Mere Mere), “Under the Umbrella”; folk dance, Whakamara children; lancers, members of tho teams; Highland fling, Miss N. Rotliery (Mok'oia); pianoforte duet, Miss Peggy Barkla and Mrs. Buchanan, Whakamara (this item received an enthusiastic reception and was encored); vocal duet, Misses A. and M. Barkla (Whakamara).

The adults’ portion of the programme was as follows, every item being encored: Song, Miss J. McGlashan, “My Dear Soul” and “That’s All”; song, Mr. Eric Paeey, “Waiata Poi” and. “The Company Sergeant Major”; recitation, Miss Renowden (Mere Merc), “Guilty or not Guilty” and “The Catechist”; song, Mrs. Buchanan (Whakamara), “Nightingale in June”; recitation, Mrs. G. Williams (Mere Mere), “That Piceadillo” and “The Surprise”; song, Mr. Buckeridge, “Off to Philadelphia” and “Father O’Flynn.” Two very amusing and clever sketches were given by a party of Mokoia performers. In the first, “Irish Justice,” the characters of judge, two prominent pleaders and the clerk of the court were depicted in most amusing style by Messrs. Turner, Kibblewhite, Richardson and Smcaton respectively. In the “Haunted House”, the characters were taken by Messrs. Kibblewhite, Turner and Marsh. Mrs. Buchanan and Miss Guppy' were accompanistes fo.r the numbers by the school children, while Mrs. J, D. McQuin was accompaniste for the soloists. Supper was dispensed by a committee of ladies, after which the hall was cleared for dancing, music being, supplied by Mrs. Langley and Mr. R. Wills. Mr. A. Williams was master of ceremonies.
