Tho nominations received this year total 100, only two less than last year. Following is a comparison between the entries for two meetings:—

TAXATION OF TOTALISATOR. EFFECT ON RACING CLUBS. Auckland, Aug. 11. Referring to the increased totalisator tax at the annual meeting of the Auckland Racing Club Sir Edwin Mitchelson said it was at present impossible to gauge the result. The increase would primarily fall 'on investors, but probably, would decrease the turnoveron the machine, causing decreased • re-, venue which'would most certainly bring lower prize money.-- '■ A reduced attendance’must also bo looked for as well as smaller fields and the 'subsequent drop in revenue would probably involve many clubs, particularly the smaller ohes, in great loss. A further serious consequence would be the tendency to increase betting with ■bookmakers. If the Dominion was to pay its way incr-'ased taxation was necessary, but great care should be exercised to save the geese that laid the golden eggs.

TURF TOPICS. '(By “Pafitu'tu;”) “Small Fish.”' . • Judging by the statistics of the 192930 season in Tasmania racing in the small isle is on a very poor scale. The most successful horse was Tarapunga, who won only £1335 for four firsts and a third, and the next on .the list is Lamp'ra, whose .six wins and a third brought in £865. Baverstock, whose seven winners annexed/ £1430, is . the lending'' sire. Mr.’ 'George ' Cann topped both' wiriiiing owners and trainers, his team taking £3BlB for 30 firsts, 22 seconds and 28 thirds'.'' W. Bevis, the crack horseman for the" season; rode in 130 races, scoring 36 first, 22 seconds and 15 thirds.

Above the Average. The jumping season 'closed in England last month, :iiid for the third year in succession W. Stott is at the head of winning jockeys.' During the season he rode in 294 races for 77 wins, 50 seconds and 27 thirds, and an average of slightly better than on win in four jumping races is well above the average. W. ■Speck, who was second, scored 55 firsts in 250 rides, and T. Cullinan; who won the Grand National On Shaun Goilin. rode in 157 jumping races and scored 32 firsts.

An Unsatisfactory Race. At Ballarat (Aus.) the other day 11 horses lined up' for a race, but only four left the barrier, the others being stopped by a horse which ran across in front of the greater part of the field. With the exception of the four mentioned, the others were pulled up,' the jockeys expecting a recall. The starter, however, declared it a race, and the stewards had no option but to confirm his decision. No distances between the- placed horses were noted, 1 aiid’ -iio 1 time taken. The wiher' was 1 an btitsider, and the public filled in tbl) gaps in the story.
