WIN FOR WHANGAMOMONA

NINE POINTS LEAD ON TAINUI MATCH BETWEEN SUB-UNIONS. FAST GAME IN NEW PLYMOUTH. In a hard, fast game Whangamomona defeated Tainui by 12 points to three in a sub-union representative match played at Pukekura Park on Saturday. The pace of the game in. the first spell was extraordinarily fast. For a long time Tainui held its own but, little by little, Whangamomona drew steadily away and at the end was considerably the better team. . In the forwards, the teams were tairly evenly matched. The most dangerous . man in the Whangamomona pack was Franks, rather similar in build and style of play to the ex-Taranaki representative. West. He had a very determined way of getting where and what he wanted. Warren and Cleland were fast in following up. Among the Tainui forwards Roberts shone out for unwearied work. Brown and Duckworth were good in tight play and Lake broke away several times in the loose. _ , It was the Whangamomona back line, however, that won the game. Coulton, at second five-eighths, was a practised player. Both on attack and defence he held the line together. Ericson at first five-eighths, handled perfectly and brought off some clever moves. At full-back Jarvis played a safe, sound game, gaining long patches of ground with excellent kicks. The Tainui backs were clever but had not the combined style of Whangamoinoua.' i'lho centre-three-quarter, ■Hepburn, had the points of the game at his finger-tips, and Coultpn was fast and tricky. J. Lake handled, very well at full-back, though his kicking lacked power. The teams were: — TAINUI. i-Black and White.) ' J. Lake Marshall Hepburn Coulton Batten bury Old Tawhaki Roberts (rover) R. In a fine rush Tainui swept down the ground, Coulton charging down on Jarvis, who just saved in time. From a scrum Whanga went off in a good I passing rush. The ball came out to Astwood and Coulton ran round to take the pass. Tainui forced just in time. Outside the twenty-five Ericson marked. Standing well back he sent the ball over , the posts with a drop-kick from farj out. Whanga 3 Tainui 0 The Tainui forwards went the length i of the field in a fine rush and Old i slipped round the blind side with Mar- 1 shall. The Whanga backs were handling surely and combining well, Coulton coming round the wing at the end of each rush. Tainui attacked, Purcell charging through. Marshall cross-kick-ed to Flatten bury, who passed to Coulton for a dash down the wing. Astwopd sent a grubber to the corner flag and Whanga was on Tainui’s line. The Whanga. forwards screwed the scrum and Franks, wno had been playing a line forward game, broke away and scored. The kicker placed the ball himself and the kick was consequently disallowed. .Whanga 6 Tainui 0

Then the Whanga pack went, down the field in a solid mass and stopped at J. Lake. The-,ball came out cleanly and Standish made a strong run. Twice again the Whanga backs tried to get through until Coulton, swerving prettily, cut through the defence and scored near the posts. Ericson failed with the kick. Whanga 9 Tainui 0 Tainui began to be overshadowed. Coulton rau nearly through again, and once, over the line,. Franks dived live yards oa. top of Lake, who forced just in time. But Tainui 'rallied.
