Women and girls are not employed to nearly such an extent in New Zealand factories as they are in some overseas countries. Female employees in New Zealand have during the past five years constituted approximately 18 per cent of the total number of employees. ■Since 1925-26 the total number of male workers has declined, while the number of woman and girls has increased. Women and girls are found chiefly in such industries as clothing-making (6,302); printing and publishing (1,664); woollen milling- (1,504); biscuit and confectionery manufacture (1,366). In the last five years, the percentage, of women employed in factories rose steadily from 17.4 to 19.7,. when they numbered 16, 506 out of a total of 83,080.
