URENUI PLUNKET SOCIETY. SUCCESS OF FIRST”ANNUAL BALL. The first annual ball staged by the Urenui Plunket Society in .the Urenui Town Hall on Thursday proved an, outstanding success. Anticipations of enjoyment shared by visitors from all parts of North Taranaki were more than realised, and the energetic committee was handsomely compensated. The decorative scheme carried out in the main hall was materially assisted j by the improvements recently put into effect by the hall committee. The interior had been lined and curtains provided for the window’s. The streamer effect, coupled with the improvements provided a cosy setting for the frocks. The committee responsible for the evening’s success was: Mesdames C. Henwood, C. D. Smith, W. Scott, G. N. Fuller, A. T. Vaughan, R. Andrews, E. Elliott, G. Pigott, G. Loveridge, D. Des Forges and H. Grylls (secretary). Novelty dances were won by Misses Lucas and Mr. Whare Edwin (lucky spot), Miss K. Zimmerman and partner (hat waltz), Miss Lucas and Mr. K. Colson (Monte Carlo); The dance music was provided by Mr. J. Renton’s jazz, orchestra, and the .master, of ceremonies was Mr. C. Henwood. The supper was in keeping with the high standard of arrangements made by the -committee;■■ ■■■ ■■ ■' SETTLER FAREWELLED. MR. AND MRS. S. HEWLETT. - Mr. and Mrs. S. Hewlett,, who have been farming in the Uruti district for a number of years, and are leaving shortly, for their future home in the Waikato, were tendered' a farewell in the Mimi schoolroom on Friday. In spite of adverse weather there was a large attendance of friends from the Uru ti, Pukear uli e,. ; Ur en ui a nil Wai toi - toi districts.- '■■ ■■ .- h ■ Mr. J. F. Phillips, on ■ behalf of the assemblage, asked Mr. and Mrs. Hewlett to accept a clock as a token of the esteem in which they were held. Mr. Hewlett had proved a worthy settler and was prominent in any movement appertaining to the district’s-welfare. Mr. Phillips extended the district’s best wishes for success in their new uistrict. Mr, Phillips’ remarks were heartily endorsed with musical honours. Speaking on behalf of the local Returned Soldiers’ Association, Mr. J. Rockett (president) extended the best wishes of fellow diggers to their departing guests. • Dancing was enjoyed to music supplied by Mrs. R. Allen (piano) and Mr. H. Martin (jazz instruments), with extras by Miss N. Oxenham and Mr. R. Allen. Mr. Alex Zimmerman was master of ceremonies. MIMI EUCHRE PARTIES. The inclemency of the weather did not deter the usual large number from attending the fortnightly euchre party and dance held on behalf of the Mimi school funds in the schoolroom on. Monday. Twelve tables were occupied. Mrs. G. Baker won the ladies’ prize and Mr. E. Sulzberger the men’s. The tables were in charge of Messrs. J. Thompson and George Baker. Supper was served by the committee controlled by Mrs. G. Baker, after which the floor was cleared for dancing. Mr. and Mrs. R. Allen supplied the dance music, and Mr. A. M. Zimmerman was master of ceremonies. GENERAL ITEMS. In furtherance of their campaign for funds, the Urenui Hall social committee held a successful mart in Urenui last sale day. As a result of their efforts, the stallholders, Mesdames G. Loveridge, C. Hen wood and D. Des Forges, had a substantial amount to add to the hall funds.

The Urenui Plunket Society soon established itself as a necessary adjunct to the township, no fewer than 30 babies being at present under the care of the Plunket nurse who visits Urenui on sale days. The membership is rapidly growing, the financial members to date (including donations) being: Mesdames R. Bramald, G. Loveridge, G. N. I Fuller, C. D. Smith, E, 8.. Elliot,- F. D. ''Des Forges, R. Andrews, G. R. Pigott, E. K. Blundell, 11. Whittaker, J. Johnson, A. M. Gordon-Glassford, A. Lord, A; Vaughan, A. Strachan, M. E. Fraser, W. L. Larsen, A. Gibson, C. Willison and W. J. Freeth.

The recently-completed two-way bridge spanning the Urenui River on the Clifton county’s section of the main highway has been opened to traffic. The bridge, the work of Messrs. Isherwood and Bellam, replaces the last of three wooden bridges which have done service for a long period over the Waiau, Onaero and Urenui rivers.

The southern approach to the Urenui tewnship has been improved by the erection in concrete of an up-to-date shop to replace the wooden structure destroyed in the recent fire. Mr. Gordon George, who has been on the staff of the Waitoitoi dairy factory for five years, has with Mrs. George taken up residence in Whenuakura, having accepted an appointment on the stall’ of that factory.

Mr. A. Vaughan left by motor on Thursday night for Wellington to witness the fourth Rugby Test.

Mr. M. L. Jonas has had the misfortune to inflict a painful injury to his right foot, and he will be incapacitated for a few days. Master Eric Elliot, a pupil of the New Plymouth Boys’ High School, who sustained a broken, arm while engaged in athletics recently, has made a complete recovery and has again resumed studies. Miss K. Robeson, who has been spending a holiday with her relatives, Mr. and Mrs, W. G. Freeth, “Ngahiwi,” returned to her home in Hamilton on "Wednesday.
