THE VEGETARIAN.
“Good morning, Miss Vole,” said young Mr. Hedgehog to the sleek little creature lie met on the edge of the market garden. “You are out early!” “I might say that you were out Late, Mr. Hedgehog,” returned Miss Vole. She was very much like a rat, only her head was thicker than a rat’s, her lega and tail were shorter, and her ears were buried in her fur. “You come out by the light of the moon, but, like all honest creatures, I walk by the light of day.” “Come, Miss Vole, because- you’re a vegetarian why should you always give me the cold shoulder?” sighed Mr. Hedgehog. “Because you would enjoy me for dinner, had yon not eaten so muck during the night that you haven’t the energy to catch me,” she replied. “I won’t hold with meat eaters. Vegetarians have a sense of honour, but you have not. Eating up innocent little grubs, and worms, and poor little mice —oh, I’m ashamed to I>3 seen talking to you! ” “And how aoout you snapping up corn shoots, and strawberries, and-nuts, and roots, and clover, and see<ls, and the bark of trees, and grass. You arc a destructive pest!’’ “You’re an insectivorous mammal!” Miss Vole was thankful that she had remembered his scientific name, as she went off to nibble the potatoes in the fi Id, crop off the tender radish shoots, and enjoy the young greens. “A destructive pest, indeed,” she though. “A sweet little vegetarian like m , who’s never done a bit of barm in her lift-!” POPSY WOPSY.
