BILLY BOY’S WORKSHOP
-MAKING AN EGG RACK. This useful egg rack is made from odd pieces of wood. You will see by the first' diagram that it holds a dozen eggs, but, by making the top a different size, it can be made to take a smaller or larger number as required. For the top, obtain a piece of wood a little over jin thick, and plane it on both sides. Saw off a piece the required size and. carefully plane the edges straight and square. Now, with your try-square and ' pencil, mark a centre line on one side, and parallel lines on each side at distances of 2jin. Next, mark four lines at right angles, also 2Jin apart. The centre diagram explains all this. To mark the circles for the holes, take your com passes,..set them to a radius of 11-16 in, and scribe the circles* fr->m points where the lines cross, as j shown in the diagram. Each circle will, I of course, have a diameter of 1 3-Bin and! h les that • size .will be about right for I the eggs. The holes can be neatly cutj out with a fret-saw alter making small openings to start the saw. After cutting the holes, trim round the edges I with a sharp penknife and finish them j smooth with glass-paper. ; Two pieces of «in wood, 7in long auu ■ IJin wide, will be required for the end supports, the. bottom part of each being cut away to a depth of |in. Saw j across the wood and chip out the pieces not required with your chisel, which can ako be used for trimming up the rough edges, b'ee lowest diagram. Each end support can be fixed to the top part of the rack by four fine nails about lin long. The finished rack can either be left unpainted or given a coating of white enamel, whichever is preferred.
