RUGBY COMPETITIONS

OLD BOYS UP TO CITY FORM. First-class football which would have been a credit to the best of city teams, was played by the Old Boys team in its match against Inglewood. Curiously enough, the majority of the Old Boys’ tries were from passing rushes started in the team’s twenty-five. Consequently the period of pleasure and excite-' meat for the spectator was much longer than usual, extending from, the moment the movement began in the twenty-five until the moment it ended on Inglewood’s goal line. The forwards are altogether a great deal better than they have been before. They work together, multiplying the strength of each effort by their unity. At dribbling Luxton stood out clearly, several times -manoeuvring the ball for 20-yard. dashes. In following up Drader has no equal, and ho manages to be just where he is wanted. Crawford, Slylield, Perry and Beck were all very good. The backs handled the ball irreproachably in the passing rushes, from the half right through to the wings. Mace played a cool, clever game, and Brown was on his best form, swerving in his old, eccentric manner. Inglewood, which sometimes plays fast, open football, was overshadowed. Really an attacking team, it bad to spend the afternoon mostly in defending. The Ross brothers consequently had few chances to show their pace. Crossman ■ vzent round the forwards well once, and opened the way for a try. Maingay took many hard knocks with forbearance and was easily the best defender. This is proved by the fact that Galbraith never once got away. The Inglewood forwards were not able to hook the ball at all, but played well in the loose, Devereaux, Laurence and Lariner showing out. Inglewood has played better games. It was unfortunate in striking the Old Boys team at its best. TEAMS FOR TO-DAY. Waimate juniors to play Hau era at Manaia. —Team same as last week.
