A large attendance at the Hawera Opera House last evening found “The Vagabond King” as enjoyable in talkie form as it was on the stage. With magnificent singing and beautiful settings, filmed entirely in technicolour, this work takes a high place among the musical dramas of the audible screen. From the opening scene in the tavern of the Parisian vagabonds to the final scene at the gallows, -when King Louis XI. pardons the man who lias saved Paris from the army of the ; Duke of Burgundy, there is just one ; riot of colour and beauty after another. I There is a beautiful set of the interior of Notre Dame, and there are scenes in the royal palace that beggar description. There is a gorgeously-coloured rose garden, the royal throne room, and i a masquerade ball which have to be seen Ito be believed. And there are the gorgeous 15th century dresses, noted for their beauty, their colour and their stateliness. Dennis King, the famous English actor, portrays Francois Villon, the king of the Vagabonds, who, for one week, is allowed to rule as King of France, and beautiful, golden-voiced Jeannette MacDonald is cast as Kath- , erine de Vaucelles, niece of the weak Louis XI., and the woman who saves Villon from the gallows. To hear Mr. King sing the well-known “Song of the Vagabonds” is an event, as also to hear' him, transformed from vagabond to courtier, sing with Miss MacDonald the lilting melody, “Only a Rose.” “If I Were' King,” is fyiother of his solos. With Miss MacDonald he is heard in “Love Me To-night.” Perhaps one of the most beautiful songs in the show is ‘Some Day,” which- is sung by Miss MacDonald in Act 1., and repeated later with full chorus. The part of King Louis is taken by O. B. Heggie, who gives the most outstanding performance of all. His characterisation of the weak-mind-ed, petulant King of France is a revelation. Miss Lilian Roth is seen as Hugnette, the tavern wench, who gives her life for Villon, and who sings most admirably the famous “Valse Huguette.” “The Vagabond King” will be shown again to-night and to-morrow.
