ALLEGED THEFT OF BONDS
DEFENCE THAT THEY WERE GIFT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Aug. 6. Pleading that certain City Council debentures, there were 13 each of £lOO. and valued at £1322, were a gift, Victor Alfred Smith to-day pleaded not guilty to a charge of theft and was ; committed for trial. . ■ The bonds were the : property of Martin Byrne, a deceased. Ui.ty Council employee, who dl’ppped dead at work and who for soma . time before his death, had been boarding with accused. The win appointed the Public Trustee administrator of• his estate:-and Byrne had mentioned that he .had:- £lOOO invested in City Council debentures. Accused was interviewed by a representative of the Public Trustee and the matter was reported to the police. Inquiry showed that at the time accused was speaking to the representa-: tiva cf the Public Trustee he had handed over 12 of the debentures to sharebrokers for sale.
