NEW ZEALAND GIFT. •'•New Zealand Welsh folk desire to offer as an unconditional gift a bardic, chair for the 1035 Eisteddfod to. celebrate the first occasion in the higtory of New Zealand on which a Welsh Lady—Lady-Bledisloe —became the first lady in the land," states a cablegram dispatched last week by Mr. J. Morgan Davies, president of the; Welsh Society of Wellington, to the Royal National Eisteddfod, which opened yesterday at Llanelly. The national festival is followed with great interest by Welsh people all over the world. This year delegates from Australia and New Zealand are present. The gift of a Bardic Chair of New Zealand kauri has been offered to the executive of the Gorsedd of Bards, of the Isle of Britain, together with a cash prize of £25 for the be<st ode submitted for the Eisteddfod of 1935. The chairing ceremony is one of the oldest institutions of the Eisteddfod, dating back to the time of the Druids. Originally a bardic organisation, the Eisteddfod has extended its influence to music and all other arts.
