ECHO OF FATAL ACCIDENT

SURVIVOR AGAIN INJURED. An echo of a recent fatal motor accident was heard when Rupert Alexander Hurley was admitted to the Hawera hospital on Saturday evening with an I injured leg. Mr. Hurley was involved in the accident on Waihi Road shortly after Christmas in which Mr. H. Hill and Miss Cross lost their lives. He was more fortunate, though badly hurt, sustaining serious injuries, including a fractured leg. He had recovered but when he slipped down a bank on Saturday he injured the same leg, with the result that he had to be removed to hospital. LADIES’ HOCKEY FINAL. ELTHAM BEATS OTAKEHO. In the final of the South Taranaki ladies’ hockey competition at Hawera on Saturday Eltham, who won the Saturday division, beat Otakeho, premiers in the Wednesday section, by three goals to nil. The teams were evenly matched in the first spell but the winners made more use of their opportunities. There were some sparkling movements but the defence was stern. Miss P. Wyld-s. however, scored twice for Eltham before the interval, each goal coming from a centring pass. After the change-over Eltham wa« in better condition, but seemed fated not to score, the Otakeho defence being very solid. Just on the final whistle there was a scramble in Otakeho’s goal mouth and Miss Smith scored. PERSONAL The Governor-General has advised the Mayor of Hawera, Mr, E. A. Pacey, that he will not be able to attend the Egmont A. and P. show but that he and Lady Bledisloe would be pleased to visit Hawera on a future occasion. The Pihama Dairy Company on Saturday expressed sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr, Robert Lambie and Mr. William Conaglen, and with Mr. J. Templeton, one of the directors, in the loss of his son. Mr. Lambie had been one of the foundation members of the company. Mr. Conaglen was also associated with the company’s formation. GENERAL ITEMS. A cigarette was lighted by a motorist while the petrol tank of his car wae being filled at a petrol pump in Hawera about 10 p.m. on Saturday. The fumes of the petrol ignited, but the flames were confined to the petrol tank and* were speedily subdued practically no damage resulting. ( In a school Rugby match at Patea on Saturday, Patea beat Kakaramea by 25 to 8. On Thursday Patea beat Waverley by 11 to 8. In aid of the Hawera Municipal Band’s uniform fund a children’s fancydrcss ball has been arranged. The function will be held in the Winter Show Buildings on Friday and a number of prizes will be awarded. On Wednesday City, the winners of the South Taranaki Wednesday Rugby competition, will play Ngatiruanui at Hawera. The match has been arranged as a benefit for J. Poi, who was injured in a match at Waitara last month. A dance will be held in the evening. City will be represented by Edwards, Lucas, Hart (2), Barlow, Norris. Morrissey, Cairncross, Kendall, Good, Young, Barron. Pearce, Brown, Macbeth, Bryant and Cameron. Ngatiruanui will be selected from the following: Tuki, Toro, Pokai. R. Ruru, Toss, M. and B. Campbell, Parata, Teni, Penny, Tito, Pokau, Bshaw. Dickson, Ratahi, Rakei, Awahou, Ngaia. J. M. Barrie’s amusing play, “What Every Woman Knows,” was read by the Hawera W.E.A. play-reading, class on Friday night. The work, which is full j of subtle humour, was enjoyed by a . large attendance. OTAKEHO HOCKEY DANCE. j PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES The 'Otakeho Ladies’ Hockey Club held a successful dance on Friday, the function being complimentary to tho men’s club on its winning the Catran Cup and shield. The trophies were presented to- the . team by Mr. C, J. AlcFadyen, who congratulated the club on winning them for the second year in succession. He said it was very creditable for a place the size of Otakeho to possess such a splendid hockey team. The club had two representatives, Gray and Surgenor, in the Nordon Cup team, and he regretted that Fergus was not also included. In the Nordon Cup game >Surgenor had given an outstanding display. The Otakeho ladies also had a very fine team and he complimented it on its win against Opunakc. He complimented tho ladies on arranging such excellent evening and he asked. Miss G. Bennett to present tho button for the most improved player in the ladies’ club. This award was made to Alias Nancy Bennett.- •• • ■

In accepting the men’s trophies Mr. C. Fergus expressed the wish that'the ladies would be equally successful in their match against Eltham. The hall presented a gay appearance with dancers under a canopy of green and white streamers, tho colours of the chib. Wills’ Orchestra played, Miss •Glengarry and Messrs O. Price and C. IV. Abbott contributing extras. Air. 11. R. Wood and Mr. IV. Grindlay were masters of ceremonies. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Nancy Bennett and Mr. J. Nicolson. ■' I
