ATHLETIC DEFEATS ELTHAM

.MARGIN OF NINETEEN POINTS. DISAPPOINTING GAME AT HAWERA Athletic defeated Eltham at Hawera i,n Saturday by 19 points to nil. With neither team fielding full strength, a rather disappointing and ragged game was witnessed. Th© game, played in line weather on a dry ground, was not confined to any particular division of tlie teams. Athletic’s backs gave rather more flashes of bright back play than their opponents. Territorial honours were in favour of the home team, which certainly deserved its win. Paterson and K. Roebuck had several shots at goal for Eltham, but neither man was .■mceessful.

Athletic forwards broke away, but Tippetts was off-side and Eltham cleared. A return of play to Athletic’s territory found the defence sound. Gower marked in a handy position and had an unsuccessful shot at goal. From l?e--hind half way Trolove broke away in a solo run with Gower in support, but be lost possession when bustled at the. -Okaiawa 25. Paterson and Bocoek failed in efforts to kick goals. Eltham carried play close to- Athletic’s line, but, Lpader saved by lining. Play swayed to Eltham’s line ) where Bishaw and Owen broke away. The latter seemed to lack sufficient pace to reach the line, and in the scramble a free kick gave Eltham relief. Gudgeon broke away lit half way and passed forward to Loader when the latter had a clear ran. Continuing the advantage Athletic carried play to Eltham’s line, where Raweliffe scored from a scramble on the line. Tuki’s kick failed. Upon resuming Eltham attacked, penetrating into Athletic territory by means of several lightning rushes. R. Bocoek had another shot at goal from a penalty well out, but failed, and half time sounded with play in midfield. • For the first few minutes of the second spell Athletic held the advantage. Tnki had an unsuccessful shot at goal. Gower, when bustled Under the posts, kicking out about a dozen yards from the goal-line. Play crossed the field where a movement in which Coleman, Phillips and Dickson were prominent, resulted in the latter scoring at the corner, Tuki’s effort to convert the try again proving unsuccessful. Eltham was hard pressed to keep the invaders out, several determined rushes taking play dangerously near Eltham’s line. Knuekey fielded Dymond’s clearing kick and after a run down the line was forced out a dozen yards from the corner and Athletic cleared. Trolove broke away supported by a couple of men, but Athletic’s defence held and back plaj swung to Eltham’s twenty-five, where, from a passing rush in which’ all the backs handled, Loader ran round to score under the goal. Juki converted. Owen made a good run, but crowded Bishaw to the line and went oiit. Play quickly crossed the field and from . a scramble Loader scored again. I uki s kick from the side line went over. Eltham’s succeeding attacks were listless, play returning to Eltham’s end where first Phij’ps and later Mundy broke away. Just on time Coleman scored Athletic’s last try. Tnki missed an easy kick as the whistle sounded with the scores:
