BILLY BOY’S WORKSHOP

HOW TO MAKE A BOOK RACK. To make this useful book rack, you will require tnree pieces of halt-inch wood, olin wide. Ono piece must bo sixteen inches long for the bottom, and the other two six and a half inches long for tire ends. Plane the edges of each piece quite straight and square. Mark a centre line on one side of one of the end pieces, and then set out the curved top part. This can be done with a pair of compasses set to a radius of 2Jin. For the second curved use a radius of Ifin and then mark two 5-Bin diameter circles at the ends of the handhole. Cut round the curved top pirt with a pad-saw, make two holes at A.A. with a 5-Bin centre-bit, and saw away the wood inside the hand-hole. Finish the edges smooth and square with the aid of a chisel and some glass-paper. The right-hand diagram explains all this. Make sure that the ends of the bottom part of the rack fit well into Die slots in the end pieces, and then fix the parte together with one-inch countersunk screws, as shown in the diagrams. The holes in the end pieces to take these screws should be deeply countersunk, so that when the screws are driven home the heads are well below the surface of the wood. The holes can be

filled up with plastic wood, which, after setting hard, can be chiselled away flush. To strengthen the end pieces, a e-mail

block B, of triangular section wood, about 4in long, can be glued in place ■underneath each joint. To finish the ends, ornaments in the shape of a rosette, about 3in diameter, can be glued on an shown. These ornaments are of wood, and can be obtained quite cheaply at most wood turnery shops, The completed rack will look very smart if yon give it a coating of cellulose paint in a bright colour.
