’DVSRRNAMBOOL'’ ON OCTOBER 4. •U is announced by the Dunlop Perduau Company that arrangements have now Own completed for holding the world famed Dunlop Road Race from Warriiambool to Melbourne on Saturday, October 4, under the auspices of the League of Victorian Wheelmen. Oh the same day, over the last 100 miles of tae 165 miles “Warmmbool” course, the amateur Colac-Melbonrne ainniai event, under the rules of the Victorian Amateur Cyclists’ Union, will also be decided, Last year 416 riders started in these classic contests, including most ot the finest long distance racing cyeJsts 111 Australia. Ine ‘ Warmambool” was first held in 8-b, and all told there have been. 21 contests held over this famous course. Duly on two occasions has the event been won by scratch men; J, Carpenter in 1890 (when the event was paced) and J. Arnst (New in 1903 being the successful ridene. The fastest

time recorded for the .165 miles is I. R. Munro’s (off 3min.) 7hr. 12min, 51sec. in 1909, the next best being H. Opperman’s 7hr. 15min. 37see, off scratch in 1924. The winner last year was H. Marshall (Western Australia) off 6min., his time being Bhr. 13min. Osec. Two particularly outstanding achieve- . ments in this classic race are the triple wins of the Australian Blue Riband by P. O’Shea (New Zealand) and H. Opperman (Victoria), the former having recorded fastest time in 1911, 1922, and 1923, whilst Opperman was successful in 1924, 1926, and 1929. In the big amateur race, Colac-Mcl-bourne, only instituted in 1923, the fastest time yet recorded for. the 100 miles is A. L. Quinton’s (Victoria) 4hr. 11 min. 47see. off scratch in 1925, whilst the fastest winner was T. 11. Marshall (■Queensland) in 1926, off the 13 minute mark, 4br. lOmin. 45sec., which was also fastest time that year.
