PETROL TAX INCREASE.
PROTEST BY PUBLIC MEETING.
The proposed increase in petrol, taxation was discussed at a public meeting convened by tho South Taranaki Automobile Association at Hawera last night, Mr. W. O'Callaghan presiding over an attendance of about 60.
After a lengthy discussion the following motion was carried by a large majority: This meeting is of opinion that the proposed taxation of petrol is inequitable and unjust and registers an emphatic protest against its imposition. Tho following amendment, moved oy Mr. W. H. Moss (Stratford), and seconded by Air. J. R. Corrigan, was defeated: This meeting regrets the necessity for the additional petrol tax, but accepts the Government’s intimation that it is the only means of meeting the financial crisis. It is, however, of the opinion that a definite promise of the removal of the tax should be made when the present financial crisis has disappearcL , ' . ..
