It. is peculiar to note how; enterprising the Stratford back line can be when playing against a comparatively weak teaiii, and th'en to watch it freeze and depend upon its forwards when resistance is strong. Last Saturday . Bublitz, Owen,. Grace, Hamilton and tha two wings," Bonner and Taylor, threw life.ball about in, excellent style and at least three of the home team’s tries were the direct result of initiative among the rearguard. As a matter ,of fact, Stratford possesses no mean backs and Bublitz, is best half the club has ..fielded for some years. If the same combination is available „next year .Stratford supporters will- look for the development of the back, play, more particularly in attack. . Good material goes to make up the Okato forwards, but they do not play as a team. Individually the majority of their pack are as t good as anything iii the competition, 'but Stratford ’was able to bore through the centre of many scrummages- to • find a clear passage ahead. In other words, the Okato men have not the art of locking together, and a great deal of wasted effort was noticeable in last Saturday’s., niatch. Only on two or three occasions did the coastal forwards continue in formation from set scrums, but the success of "the push that sent F. Goodwin . over to score Okato’s first try should have been a valuable lesson. Like other country teams, Okato has difficulty in assembling" its men for practice. Nevertheless the game at Stratford showed clearly that a formidable pack'exists in its component'parts, and a' little wise coaching would work wonders. The backs, admittedly, were, weak and ■ that is all the more reason why concentration upon the frontal play should bring results • ■ ' '

A movement resembling British tactics was responsible for a good try scored by Okato. While the ball was wending a somewhat erratic passage through the backs the forwards remained spread out in the centre of the field, keeping just on side. Armstrong on the wing finally received the ball and Stratford charged down upon his defenceless head. Taking his time he punted across, the ball falling at the feet of his advancing forwards and Taylor, who got there first,, had no trouble in strolling over to score. Not to put too fine a point upon the movement it must be admitted that the whole Stratford team was caught fast asleep. Perhaps the team did not expect such a rude awakening from Gkato. Okerca then proceeded to kick a goat '
