ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

NORTHERN DIVISION MEETS

.■ CHINESE CUP MISUNDERSTANDING. ARRANGEMENTS FOR SIX-A-SIDE. The northern sub-division of the Taranaki Football Association met in New Plymouth last night. Present: Messrs. J. R. ' Sceats (chairman), G. Lawrence, J. Chapman, R. Bell, J. Smith, J. Hill, Jackson, P. Wilmshurst, Hoiyie, H. W. Rydes, P. Gardner, J.'Fawcett and C. Cuff (honorary secretary). “Evidently the reason given for the failure to enter northern clubs in the Chinese Cup competition was that no notice was given calling for nominations,” wrote Mr. G. Littlejohn, secretary of the Taranaki Football Association. He said he had already, on behalf of the association, denied responsibility ’ for any misunderstanding regarding the draw.- This was entirely due to the non-attendance of delegates of New Plymouth clubs at the executive meeting. It would be recollected that at the annual meeting all club delegates present promised to enter teams in a knock-out competition for, the Chinese Cup. That clearly indicated that no notice asking for nominations was necessary. “I very -.inch regret that such an attitude should be adopted by northern clubs as it reflects on the integrity of the execu- ' five of the association and myself as secretary,” said Mr. Littlejohn. “I should be obliged, therefore, if your sub-committee at • its next meeting would review its action and, if possible, • withdraw the inferences made." It had only remained for the association to declare the Hawera Club and the Stratford Club winners by default, said the letter. The final was played between those - clubs at Stratford on July 12. The chairman said the Chinese Cup was the subject of a misunderstanding owing to the whole draw not being published. There would be no harm in apologising to the Taranaki Football Association if its feelings had been hurt. Mr. Chapman denied that he as a dele--gate had agreed to play in the competition. It was not a . unanimous decision, but was made on the chairman’s casting vote. It was decided on. the motion of Mr. Smith, seconded by Mr. Chapman, to write to the Taranaki Football Association explaining that at the time the criticism was made the northern division was not aware delegates at the annual, meeting had agreed to nominate. Regret was expressed that there should have been a misunderstanding. DRAW FOR PRIEST SHIELD. It was' decided to hold the six-a-side tournament for the Priest Shie'd at Western Park and the racecourse on August 9. The draw for the first round was made as follows: —Moturoa A v. Pirates B, Western Park, 1.30 p.m.; Moturoa B v. Pirates A, Racecourse, 1.30 p.m.; Moturoa V v. Celtic, Western Park, 2.30 p.m.; Caledonian B v. Albion A, Racecburse, 2 p.m.; Caledonian A v. Albion B, Western Park, 2 p.m. Messrs. Sceats, Lawrence, Cuff and G. •’ H. Gorringe were appointed to prepare a time-table for the games subsequent to the . first round. Messrs. Gorrir,ge and W. Shepherd were nominated official scorers for the tourna- . m£nt. • *t was decided to sold a dance on the . night of the tournament, the arrangements being left to Messrs. Bell, Oscroft, Sceats and Southon.. It was decided that all clubs should be . requested to put in writing their opinion that a northern sub-division was necessary organisation.—The secretary reported that only one club had written in that direction so far. , The Rangers Club wrote withdrawing ’ from the senior competition owing" to inability to field a team, It . was hoped to ’ re-organise the club and enter a team next season. , ■ ...... '. The. South Auckland Assm'ttion wrote regretting it had been compelled to aban- ' don sending a team on tour this season. - ' MATCH AT WANGANUI. Referring in a letter dated July 9 to the WanganuFTaranaki match at Wang.a- -’ niii on July 26, Mr. G; Littlejohn, secretary ■ of the Taranaki Football Association, wrote ' that he supposed New Plymouth players would be selected to travel. • The secretary pointed out that no northern players had been selected. He had understood that Mr. Adams was the sejector. He wrote to Mr. Adams and later - wired for particulars of the team, so that northern players should be given due no- . tice, but no replies were received. He thought some v of the northern players , would have liked to go to Wanganui. Mr, Sceats said he had understood the association had decided that the team for Wanganui should be selected from the south and the team for the Manawatu match from the north. That was not reported to the northern sub-division. Mr. Cuff denied this arrangement. Mr. Sceats said Mr. Adams had telephoned him on the Friday to obtain two inside men for the trip the next day, but the time was not sufficient. Mr. Cuff moved that a protest should be made to the Taranaki Football Association concerning the selection of the team for Wanganui, but there was no seconder.
