CO-ORDINATING EFFORT
TARANAKI FEDERATION’S ACTION# MINISTER OOMMENDS By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last ight. In reply to a question submitted by Mr. H. G. Dickie on behalf of. the Taranaki members of Parliament,, tho Hon. A. J. Murdoch, Minister of Agriculture, said his attention had been drawn to Press reports of a recent meeting at Ilawera of the Taranaki !• ederation of Dairy Factories, and it was evident to him in considering tho whole matter that the most important question before tho dairy industry at present, was that of cheese quality. Ho commended the decision of the meeting to put into force a voluntary scheme for obtaining funds for paying a premium on higher qualities of cheese?,and. he -stated this should prove a valuable factor- in raising' the general standard and should be an incentive to 4-U to produce an article of. the highest finality. Apart from this, said the Minister, it was pecessary to take advantage of all other means by which improvement could b ; e effected. Scientific worker? who were already closely studying this matter would be aflorded every opportunity for -carrying on research. The Departments of Agriculture and Industrial Research were working together through the Dairy Research Committee, which was a very representative -body. The Dairy Research Institute at Massey College was the main' centre of. J this special research, and in its laboratories a..d its dairy factory was giving special attention to openness in cheese. Similar investigations were being prosecuted in the laboratories at Hamilton and Hawera. The Minister added that lie intended to arrange, in co-operation with the Ministe- in charge of the Scientific and Industrial Research Department, for a special conference of all scientists engaged in dairy research to discuss the question and advise the Government as to what could" be done further to overcome the existing difficulties.
