SECONDARY SCHOOL GAME

. N.P.B.H.S. BEATS STRATFORD WIN FOB THE SECOND FIFTEEN. BETTER KICKING WINS MATCH. The second fifteen of the New Plymouth Boys? Hi"h School School yesterday defeated the Stratford Technical High School first fifteen on the new ground at the New Plymouth school by 13 pointe to 11. Stratford’s backs seemed the stronger on the day and scored three tries to New Plymouth's two. McCallum, however, turned the scales in favour of New Plymouth by converting both tries and kicking a penalty goal, while only one of Stratford’s tries was converted. Both sides attempted to play open school Rugby, but there were weaknesses evident. The New Plymouth boys, in the second half, did not seem to realise the necessity for kicking and not passing when defending, and repeatedly tried to tackle round the neck. The Stratford rear division showed promise but at times lacked the necessary finishing touch. Fredeberg was sound at half °for -New Plymouth, although a trifle slow, .but the beet back was Peake, who showed good judgment and used a powerful kick. Peddie could be relied on for tackling, but otherwise this department was weak. Sullivan, at first five-eighth, for the Stratford team, eclipsed his vis-a-vis, wriggling through the slightest opening and eluding New Plymouth many times. The other Stratford backs played a sound game without being, brilliant. McCallum was one of the best forwards in the School "team, while Wynyard was prominent on occasions. Harkness and p. Fastier played well for Stratford. ‘ SCHOOL HOOKS WELL. School won the toss and flayed down the gully with a slight breeze. Fredshurg marked calmly and the School forwards followed up his kick and caught Crossman with the ball. The Stratford pack swept through when a pass was dropped, but the School forwards retaliated. Several scrums were formed, from which School hooked consistently, only to lose - the advantage when Fredsberg was overwhelmed by the Stratford pack. Crossman initiated a Stratford' attack, and a similar movement by School looked promising until Peddie threw the ball along the ground. Harkness played off-side on his own twenty-five and McCallum attempted a shot at goal, which sailed- below the bar. Play had hung around half-way for some time when Fredsberg sent his backs away well. Peake put in a long kick which Kivell fumbled, allowing Peddie and Hoskin to kick through to the line. Hoskin used his speed and just won in the race for the ball. McCallum’s kick was a perfect one. Whiting swung play across the field swiftly with a powerful kick. The School backs i would pot tackle and before they realised what had happened Paul gathered in, side-stepped the full-hack, and sprinted for the line, scoring easily between the posts after a,50 yards dash. P. Fasticr’s first kick was well over, but, the New Plymouth forwards had charged too soon and he took a second kick, which failed. New Plymouth 5, Stratford 3. Stratford took up the attack again for Sullivan to shoot through .on School’s line. He was held up jnst in time, but a moment, later picked up again and was pushed out at the corner. Sehool could not get free and Stratford came again with McCready leading. Stratford would have scored Jhad its movements contained more snap. The Stratford efforts slackened and School took charge, a wave of black-and-white forwards 'going through to Stratford territory. FLUCTUATION OF FORTUNES, Sehool was playing keenly, gradually working up through the Stratford half, > and a free kick in front of the goal was a gift to McCallum. P. Fattier ' attempted a goal from nearly halfway. The ball fell short and Peake ran strongly- and finished with a strong line kick to the Stratford half. McCalum smashed up the Stratford backs and '' started an irresistible rush. Spence and Wynyard smothered the full-back and ‘ Peake 'came Up with a strong run to, finish the movement and touch down by the woal. McCallum kicked his third goal. I-’eake ran back to clear deep in his own half but failed to kick. Paul escaped a couple of high tackles and ran for the line, only to be forced out |t the last moment. Stratford, not to ' be denied, kept up the pressure and was rewarded when Crossman scored in the corner. P. Fastier’s kick was unlucky. Stratford had four men in a row with one School back to beat but could not score. School lost many chances of clearing by preferring to pass in its ’ own twenty-five. McMillan lost an easy chance when a School player was offside. Wynyard broke away with the ball from a scrum. Sullivan regained > ground with one of his characteristic runs. W. Fastier retired with an injured ankle and was replaced in the Stratford forwards by Jones. Poor passing kept. jSchool on the defence until Peake cleared once more. Hoskin had i only the full-back to beat, but did not seem to know what to do, eventually tapping the ball gently into the defender’s arms. Whiting was lucky when School stood and watched him break , through until McKee took . a hand and worried the Stratford defence. Again School showed a weakness as Stratford , went for the line. The ball rolled over , the line, and the whistle sounded before the ball was touched down, Stratford being awarded a try. Whiting had no difficulty in converting. Two points only separated the scores, and with a chance of victory Stratford played strongly. School was no less in earnest, but time came almost immediately. j New Plymouth 13 Stratford 11 Mr. E. Gilmour refereed.
