TARANAKI POWER BOARD

I EXTENDING RETICULATION SURREY TO EVERETT ROAD. REQUEST mull NEW PLYMOUTH. Tiie monthly meeting of the Taranaki Power Board was held yesterday, there being. present Messrs. H. G. Carman (chairman), M. J. Gernlioefer, N. H. Moss, R. J. Knuckcy, J. Dobson. H. J. Marchant, C. E. McGuinness and C. Foreman, The resident engineer reported:— The number of consumers at the end .of June was 2016. Units generated, dining the month totalled 794,100,. The maximum demand of 2445 k.w. occurred | on June 10, and the largest daily output of 26,000 units occurred on June 25. New Plymouth took power on 25 days of the month, its demand reaching 400 k.w. on several .occasions. On two occasion, by arrangement with New Plymouth, the plant was closed down for an hour and an hour and a-half approximately while minor adjustments were made to the switchboard. During these times, which occurred on Sunday afternoon and during the night, a supply of power was taken from New Plymouth. Installations connected during the month were as follow, figures for the corresponding period last year being given in parentheses: Milking motors, 2 ( —); other motors, 2 (I); stoves, 1 (3); .water heaters, — (4); lighting and heating, IS (19)’ Work has proceeded on the Junction Road—Mangaone Road and Bristol Road —Mangaone Road extensions, and the I services on these roads. These sections* will be livened up before the date of the meeting, SURREY ROAD RETICULATION. A canvass has been made of Surrey Road, Tariki, with unsatisfactory results, one motor, one range, one waterheaier and three lighting and heating installations only being signed up in a , distance exceeding If miles. Arrange- i ments were made for Messrs. Mac Ewan ( to wait on Mr. Johnstone to learn his .< decision with respect to a second motor. Messrs. Mac Ewan’s man was advised j that Mr. Johnstone has abandoned his I intention of installing even the one < motor. It appears, therefore, that- there i is nothing further to be done in this matter at present. ; It wa? resolved that Mr. Johnstone be i notified that the canvass shows a re- f turn of seven per cent, and the road I can therefore only be. reticulated under t guarantee as provided for by the Elec- 5 trie Power Boards Act. cl h GOOD PROSPECTS AT TAR ATA. ; i a The resident engineer reported: A re- c canvass has been made of the Tarata district, and a very much better public b feeling has been disclosed than was 0 found during the previous canvass in 6 September, 1927. Of the people on whom n Mr. Prentice called all signed up for an installation of some kind with the exception of two. In these cases the owners were away from home, and in each case it was considered probable that an installation would be made. The length of line involved is about five miles and the route would be from the power

station along the Motukawa Road to the point where it meets Junction Road. From this point the line would follow Junction Road through Tarata village and to the intersection of Junction Road and Wiri Road. Short lines would be run each way from this point along Wiri Road and Junction Road. The cost of the installation with switch gear at the power station I estimate at between £2OOO and £2250, Immediate revenue to be expected is £2OB per annum, with a further £124 at later dates. The response for cooking has been very poor. With approximately 20 consumers, however, it is practically cer +o in that several stoves would ultimately be installed, thus further improving the probable revenue. The estimate of cost given' above is based on experience on the .present system, A detailed survey has not been made. It was decided that consideration be postponed till next meeting to enable the secretary to prepare information similar to that on the Stratford extension. The New Plymouth Borough Council wrote applying for the consent of the board to a license being granted to the council by the Public Works Department to supply consumers within the - area between York Road and the Manganui River. This area, the letter stated, was originally intended to be included in the New Plymouth supply area but was omitted and was neither in the New Plymouth nor Taranaki area. All the settlers had signed an application to be included in the New Plymouth area and it was understood that the Public Works Department was prepared to grant a license provided the board and the local authorities concerned agreed. It was decided to hold over considera- < tion of the matter, the secretary in the 1 meantime to write to the New Ply- i mouth Borough Council asking if it i would agree to the Taranaki Power < Board continuing to supply the area i north of Bristol Road. (

The engineer reported that the reconstruction of the bridge on Messrs. Eva Bros.’ property had been completed.
