NEW ZEALAND BEATEN

IPSWICH LEAGUE VICTORY. TOURISTS SOMEWHAT SLUGGISH. By Telegraph—Tress Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 10.15 p.m. Ipswich, July 23. Ipswich defeated the New Zealand League team at Ipswich to-day by ten points to three. The New Zealanders were somewhat sluggish but despite the scores gave a better display than against Queensland. Thia is Ipswich’s fifth victory in seven matches against All Black League teams. After 20 minutes’ play without a score, in which time the visitors threw the ball about in great style but encountered stubborn opposition, Ipswich opened its scoring account with a penalty goal by Porter. Shortly afterwards Ipswich continuing the attack, Bennett scored a good try which Porter converted. Ipswich kept up the pressure and Thornton from a scrum near the line hurled himself across. Porter failed to add tho major points. The half-time score was: Ipswich 10, New Zealand 0.

In the second half play was more even. Stephenson and Clark' continued to give the visitors a feast of the bail but there was little understanding among the backs. As on Saturday cohesive movements were lacking. Ten minutes before full-time, however, the New Zealand backs combined in a fine rush from the fifty yards mark. The ball went to Abbott, who with a clear field touched down with supports handy. Dufty missed with the kick. Although Dufty also failed with three penalty kicks during the earlier stages of the match, the big New Zealander, whose third match this was against Ipswich, was a tower of strength to his side. His kicking for gaps in the field was extremely effective. The forwards worked hard, Eckoff again playing a dashing game. The weather was fine and the ground hard, but the attendance was poor. The teams were:—

New Zealand.—Dufty, Abbott, Littleton, Pearse, Meyer, Seagar, Dodds, Clader, Stephenson, Clark, Griffiths, Timms, Eckoff. Ipswich. —Smith, Wallis, Rollo, Chigley, Porter, Donnar, Gee; Doyle, Dempsey, Fraser, Thornton, Moloney, Bennett.
