COURSING AT PATEA

WATERLOO ME ET.ING CO M MENCES.

CHAMPION HOUNDS COMPETING

Favoured with line weather, the 1930 New Zealand Waterloo Cup coursing meeting was begun on the Pa tea-Ha - worn Coursing Club’s Plumpton at AVhenuakura yesterday before one of the largest attendances in the history of the meeting. There were 56 greyhounds competing, the cream of coursing dogs from the North Cape to the Bluff. The hares were in great fettle, set the hounds a difficult task, and provided the public with many thrilling runs. An almost entire absence of kills was a pleasing feature of the day. Commencing almost sharp at noon,, two rounds of the major event, the Waterloo Cup, the stake of which is £l7B, were completed. The third round of the cup. two rounds of the Waterloo Purse and one round of the Waterloo Plato will be run to-day, to-morrow being reserved for the finals. The conduct of° the meeting left nothing to be desired and reflected much credit on the hard-working officials who were: —Patron, Mr. A. T. Christensen; president, Mr. L. Hunt; bon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. F. 8. McKenna; slipper, Mr. D. Telford; judge, Mr. T. Hughes; slip steward, Mr. J. Fea ver; hare stewards, Messrs. F. Bourke and H. Neal. COMING OPERETTA AT KAPONGA. ’ For a season of two nights, Thursday and Friday, the people of Kaponga district will have an opportunity of witnessing the performance of that popular operetta “Princess of Poppyland. The scene is laid in a garden m Poppy-

i land, where the king celebrates the debut of his daughter, the Princess, by throwing open the country to representatives of all nations. Among the guests invited is Baron Insomnia, who is viewed as a suitable consort for the Princess. But there is a humble student in the land who has become enamoured of the Princess, his admiration being by no means distasteful i > the lady herself. The Baron arrives resolving to secure the magic casket “Beauty Sleep,” which contains the fortune and welfare of Poppyland. The plan succeeds, but the loss is unsuspected, although everybody loses the power of sleep, including even the Honourable Dozey, a sleepy secretary. Consternation seizes the kingdom when it is discovered that the magic casket is missing. However, the festivities must proceed, decrees. the King, and in the reseption hall of the castle Spanish gypsies entertain with song and dance. The casket is found meanwhile, and the curtain descends to the merry' pealing of golden wedding bells. The operetta provides numerous items of humour, tuneful melodies and pretty costuming. The scenery' is attractive and colourful, and does full . justice to the performance. Orchestral numbers will enrich the musical section.. The operetta is to be repeated at Alanaia on August 5 and at Opunake on August 14. At each place a portion of the net proceeds will be donated to some worthy object, those mentioned being the Kaponga Plunket Society,. Manaia I Orchestral Society' and Opunake Seaside Society, MATAU NEWS,' ~- ■ . ! (From Our Own Correspondent.) Alotor traffic to Matau is impossible at present. Twice last week motor lorries on the North Road were stuck hard and fast in several places, one having to be left overnight on the Matau' Saddle. The fortnightly euchre party—dance in aid of hall funds was held on Friday. It was not as well attended as usual owing to the inclement weather. However, it was a jolly party. The prizes for the euchre, which were donated by Air. and Airs. G. Rawlinson, -were won bv Airs. A. Rolfe and Air. AV. AlcCoard. After supper had been provided by the ladies dancing was enjoyed till the early hours of the morning, music being supplied by Airs. J. S. Fletcher (Purangi) and Air. A. AV.' Smellie. The Alangoapa Road works by the unemployed are now nearing completion, and the Alatau Saddle will be the. next work, the survey being nearly finished. The low-level bridges at Alatau and Waitara were flooded to a depth of nine feet last week. Ferrets and weasels are again becoming a nuisance by raiding the settlers’ fowl houses and taking eggs. Mrs. J. 8. Fletcher, who has been the guest of her parents, Mr. and Airs. H. Larsen, has returned to Purangi. Alias H. Ayers is spending a holiday in Stratford. Air. 0. Alumby has returned to Inglewood. MOKOIA DISTRICT NEAVS. ,i .r The Ohangai Football Cub held a ball on Wednesday' evening. chestra supplied the music. Supper arrangements were in the hands of a committee under the guidance of Airs. N. AV. See and Airs. Holden. Another of the series of euchre parties arranged by the Alokoia hall committee was held on Friday evening, and proved one of the most successful held this winter. The prizes were won by Airs. R. Forbes and Air. H. Kibblewhite. Alusic for the dance which followed was supplied by Misses R. Webber and J. Lander and Alesdames Holden and Percy. Air. R. Church was master of ceremonies.

The Mokoia factory has commenced another season, running for the first time on July 18. The supply is not very good at present, but is expected to increase rapidly, and an early start with cheese making is anticipated. r This winter has witnessed the removal of three families from the Mokoia district.
