. • • - * - TV * .•» ‘ ' DEATH OF MRS. S. HODGE. ’ The news of the death of Mrs. S. ' - Hodge in Hawera after a 'comparatively short illness came as a-shock to many friends. Mrs. Hodge - was "the • fourth. - daughter (Annie Rosetta) of. Mr. .arid. Mrs. John Armstrong,- Argyle Street, Hawera, ‘and was born at Kakaramea, •. 43 years ago. Mrs. Hodge received her early education at Kakaramea and later at the Alton school.; She was married to Mr. S. Hodge and they' made their home in Alton, Mrs. Hodge was always a willing helper jn anything connected with the welfare of .the district and always took an t active ' part in church •work. The’interment took place’ at A the Patea' cemetery ori /Wednesday, the Rev. Gibson officiating. ‘ It was the largest funeral ever seen in the district and bore testimony to the high esteem in which Mrs. Hodge was held. The casket was completely covered with beautiful wreaths and floral . The sympathy felt for Mr. Hodge an<3 his family oi' six daughters has beesj' . evidenced by. the large number of lebc tens and telegrams of condolence rem ceived. As a tribute to the memory o$ Mrs. Hodge the children of the Altofu school, with the headmaster, Mr. Sadc . ler, were standing at attention at thjfl cross-roads when the cortege passed through the township.

Last week the bachelors of Oaonui and district gave a complimentary dance for the ladies who assisted to make the recent bachelors’ ball the success it was. There was a large attendance. Mr. J. McFie, as master of ceremonies, kept things going merrily all the evening. Henderson’s Opunake orchestra played popular dance numbers.
