HOTEL ROOMS ROBBED

• THIEF DECAMPS WITH CASH, VISITS TO TWO HOUSES. The sum of £4 3s in cash was taken from the room of Mr. A. 0. Casey, proprietor of the Central Hotel, Eltham, early yesterday morning. The porter, who rose, before six o’clock to start work, was proceeding to gather the boots from the rooms upstairs on the right wing of the hotel, when, switching on the light at the top of the stairs, he saw that the door of Mr. and Mrs. Casey’s bedroom was ajar. Almost at the same time he saw a strange man standing in the passage. The man, seeing that he was observed, walked to the door at the end of the passage and ran down the stairs and outside. Perceiving that something was wrong, the porter awoke Mr. Casey, who saw his clothes were lying on the floor. On being informed of the wanderer Mr. Casey said he thought that he had heard someone moving about but had not troubled about it. It was found on investigation that money was missing from his clothes, which had been left on a chair in a room close to his bedside. Altogether £4 3s had been taken —£2 in notes in his trousers’ pockets and £2 3s wrapped up in his vest pocket. Later a boarder at the Coronation Hotel, Mr. T. H. Murray, Government Inspector of Machinery, reported the loss of money doing the night. Mr. Murray states that he retired about 11 p.m. and did not discover his loss until going to breakfast next morning. He then ascertained that £5 10s in notes had been taken from his trousers’ pockets. His ' clothes were in an open wardrobe at the foot of his bed close to a window which opens on to a fire escape. His watch and other money were not touched by the intruder. Mr. Murray was not aroused by any . untoward incident, but another boarder .. in the hotel reports hearing suspicious movements during the early hours of the morning. However, neither he nor any of the other occupants of the hotel was disturbed. EX-FIREMAN HONOURED.' LIFE SERVICE MEDAL. At the annual meeting of the Eltham Fire Board, ex-Fireman C. L. Libeau was honoured by the presentation of a life service medal in recognition of his services to the Eltham Fire Brigade. . The Mayor (Mr. I. J. Bridger) said that Mr. Libeau had given excellent service to the brigade for 11 years, during which period he had been secretary for eigdit years. The brigade-was unfortunate in losing his services, but, no doubt, his thoughts were still with his old comrades. He congratulated Mr. Libeau on being awarded such a coveted distinction. A very strong recommendation had to go before the United Brigades’Association before it would award such an honour. Mr. Libeau said he was very proud of the honour of obtaining a life service medal. If he had put in good service, it had been a labour of love, and there was no body of men he would be more pleaded to associate with than the Eltham Fire Brigade members. No matter where he went, he had not found their equal. He trusted that the brigade would continue to prosper, and that the spirit of harmony would always prevail in its work.
