UNTIDY APPLICATIONS.

SOME ALMOST ILLEGIBLE. Strong criticism of the untidiness of written applications for positions which came before the Gisborne High School Board was voiced by Mr. John Kinder at a meeting on Saturday. “I wish to place on record my strongest disapproval of the form in which the applications and testimonials are placed before the board,” he said. It is quite the exception to find an application neatly and clearly set out. Some are simply disgraceful. The applicants are nearly all graduates, and we assume that they send in their applications in th' hope of securing an appointment. Where the position is one for the express purpose of giving instruction, it is difficult to understand why any applicant should deliberately place his very worst testimonial before the board. A note marked on one set handed to me was: ‘Cannot read.’ The application was from a graduate with the M.A. degree, and several years’ experience. There were two pages of foolscap, and the applicant began with a long, desultory preamble about cricket and football, leaving his very fine scholastic attainments to a short note at the foot. “The other applications were haphazard and piecemeal notes. Several were screwed into small envelopes. In one ease we could not even agree upon the name of the applicant. It must' be apparent that such applications are not fair to the board.” ‘■They meet their own reward, do they not ” remarked Mr. 11. E. Bright. “They are dealt with to the detriment of the applicant.” Tiie discussion closed when a member suggested that with the publicity given to the subject future .applicants would have their applications in better order. It was also suggested that the matter was one which the Teachers’ Gazette should tako up.
