CONTROL OF FOOTBALL

ARRANGEMENT OF MATCHES MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS. DISCIPLINE OF PLAYERS. A meeting of the management committee of the Taranaki Rugby Union was held at Stratford last night, when there were present Messrs. J. McLeod (chairman), J. Goodwin, W. A. Guy, C. L. Mullaney, J. S. Hickey, G. H. Percy, A. H. Guy, E. H. Young, W. H. Moyes, J. W. Paterson, R. C. Rutherford, J. Garcia and H. G. McDonald (acting secretary). The secretary of ■ the Thames Valley

Rugby Union wrote confirming an >' earlier telegram, which advised the cancellation of the tour and match for July 9. It was with feelings of regret, he said, that his union had been compelled, through financial reasons, to abandon the tour; Three sub-unions had failed to find their quota and the N.Z.R.U. had not allowed an aiticipated grant. The Waikato union wrote confirming a‘match to be played at Hamilton on August 6. .The North Auckland Union forwarded a copy of the itinerary of its touring team and asked .that .necessary arrangements be made. The Taranaki game is set down for August 13, and is to be ■ played at Stratford. Mr. Young was authorised to endeavour to arrange for the Stratford shops ' to’ close for a couple of hours on that . date.

The Manawatii-Horowheniia Union confirmed August 23 as the date of the Taranaki-Manawhenua- game, and asked that the match be played at Hawera to gave the extra travelling. The chairman • pointed out that on August 23 the Auckland Grammar School would be -playing at New Plymouth. Mr. Goodwin: Could not the New Plymouth High. School team play at Hajvera? The chairman remarked that from the viewpoint of finance it would be better to play the match at New Plymouth. The union could do with the finances this year. It was stated that there would be only three representative matches in Taranaki this season —North Auckland at Stratford, Hawke’s Bay at New Plymouth and Manawhenua.

Mr. Young moved that the Manayflienua match be played at New Plymouth, with the Grammar School match Jis a curtain-raiser. Mr. Goodwin suggested that an en-

deavour should be made to alter the date pf the Manawhenua match, but there were difficulties in the way, as it was found that there would be the danger jt)f clashing with the Taranaki Hunt Club (meeting. It was decided to play the match at New Plymouth.

' Messrs. W. A. Guy and J. Garcia were appointed managers of the team to tour porth in August.

PLAYER ORDERED OFF.

Mr. W. H. Burgess reported that he had ordered off an Athletic junior player, W. Mundy, in the Opunake-Athletic match for questioning the referee’s decision. Mr. Burgesg said the incident was really the culminating point of persistent questioning on the part of the Athletic*team. The players seemed to think that every decision was wrong. “Twice,” said the letter, “the majority of the team questioned a decision, only to find that it was the opposing side that was being penalised.” Mr. Burgess said there was a different tone in the game after he had ordered Mundy off, and he suggested that the team and player had been sufficiently punished. The secretary of the Athleti- club wrote, outlining the position, and asking for a replay of the match with Opunake at a neutral ground. It was stated that the Athletic team had journeyed to Opunake and found no referee. An Opunake man, W. Burgess, was obtained, and it was understood that he was jiot affiliated to the Referees’ Association. It was believed he had acted unfairly and proved most unsatisfactory. "When the captain had appealed on a point he was ordered off the field. Mr. A. H. Guy eaid that the South Taranaki Referees’ Association expressed regret that the referee appointed had not attended to take the match. Mr. Burgees had been a member of the aeflociation and for that matter still was, though not at prebent an active member. °He was a thoroughly responsible man. ' It was resolved that to the knowledge of the union Mr. Burgees was a ’competent referee 'and a member of the Association, and that the application to J’e-play the match be refused. ' In accordance with the referee’s recommendation a motion was brought forward that the player be warned, but Mr, Goodwin raised an objection, pointing out that the player concerned had played against the Hawera juniors last week. The referee would not have ordered the player off without cause, and Jie should receive more punishment. A member considered that the club should be asked for an explanation in playing the man who was automatically suspended until hie case was dealt with. Mr. Goodwin said there were breaches pf the rules occurring in South Taranaki that should be checked. He instanced a third grade match in which one team plaved a man of 25 years of age and the other team also played youths over ’age. Mr. Rutherfurd moved that the player be warned in accordance with the referee’s report. Mr. Hickey seconded. Mr. Goodwin moved an amendment that the player be stood down for two playing Saturdays. This was seconded by Mr. W. H. Moyes and carried. It was resolved to ask the Athletic Club whether it was correct that Mundy had been played on Saturday last. Ha■wera and Athletic clubs are also to be asked if it is correct that they were playing over-age players in their third grade teafns. i ALLOCATION TO CLUBS. The secretary submitted a statement shewing that clubs’ share of the gate the first round totalled £l9B 18s Bd, being allocated as follows: Old Boys £25 10s sd, Star £l7 Is Id, Tukapa £25 Is 4d, Clifton £l5 11s 3d, Eltham £3 10s 9d, Stratford £l5 Ds sd, Inglewood £l4 12s Cd, Okato £6 18s 8d? Waimate £l3 Os Bd, Hawera £lO 17s, Patea £l2 ss, Okaiawa £7 4s lid, Athletic £3 14s Cd, Kaponga £5 6s 3d, Opunake £l3 Is 2d, Celtic £9 12s lid. It was stated. That this was considerably less than last ...year, .

Mr. Ruthcrfurd suggested. for the consideration of delegates that the basis of allocation of the gate money should be altered and instead of the 45 per cent, being equally divided between the two clubs, that, say, 25 per cent, should be so divided and the other 20 per cent, pooled and divided equally between the clubs.

■ Mr. B. Ballot, secretary of the Taranaki Rugby Referees’ Association, north division, wrote on behalf of his association to inform the union that “pinpricking” with regard to the racecourse grounds was far from their minds. They agreed, stated the letter, that the grounds in question were properly marked, but the complaint was that there was no dead-ball or goal line flags on that particular day. The referees had found no cause for complaint since that date. The Clifton Club wrote regarding the re-instatement of A. Chard from senior to junior status. The Clifton seniors could not find a place for* him, and it was understood he could not leave work early enough to travel. It would be a pity to deprive him of a game with Urenui juniors. A letter was received from the Tukapa Club asking that H. B. Blincoe be reinstated from League to Rugby. He last plaved with the Newton Club (Auckland) in 1928. The reinstatement wars recommended. The Star Club asked that it be permitted to play 0- Batten, who last year 'played for the fifth grade team but who .was now residing in the Okato district. He had played for Okato first juniors but they had’ since dropped out of the competition and Batten was keen to play.—-Approved subject to the Okato Club having no objection. The Star Club also asked that E. Hoffmann be reinstated from senior to junior as he wished to play for the B first juniors.—Granted subject to playing for the B.tcam. The secretary of the Urenui Club wrote that his club had decided to continue in the competition and would be pleased' to play fixtures as already drawn.

The central division executive controlling junior football asked that the Stratford High School team at present playing fourth grade with no chance of winning be allowed to play in the finals of the° fifth grade competition. There was no fifth grade in their division and they were all eligible as regarded age. It was pointed out that this would hardly be fair to the fifth grade teams. At present both Hawera and New Plymouth High Schools were playing in the third and fourth grade teams that would be eligible to enter in the fifth grade. It was resolved that the union could not accede to the.request.

The application of the Strathmore Club for the transfer of D. Corkill from Inglewood was approved, subject to it being in order, but the transfer of W. gangster from Celtic was refused. Applications from the Celtic Club for the transfer of three Makahu players for the Whanga Sub-Union owing to that union’s competition being closed was refused, as it was pointed out that it was not possible to grant the transfers unless the players changed their residence.

The secretary of the Pukekura Park sportsground lighting committee asked, for a°donation towards the expenses that will be incurred in the installation of the lights at the park.—lt was resolved that the union regretted it was unable to accede to the request.

A request for the donation of a further £25 towards the cost of primary schools’ football was received. —Granted.
