VERY POPULAR BALL. (From Our Own Correspondent). The town hall presented a gay and animated appearance on Tuesday night on the occasion of the Swiss ball, -when it is estimated that one of the biggest crowds seen there, about 300 persons, attended. The success of the function was far in excess of the expectations of the promoters, the younger folk of Swiss families. Visitors were present from as far south as Patea and as far north as New Plymouth. Elaborate preparations beforehand by the men’s committee had put the floor in good order, and with the assistance of lady enthusiasts who undertook the decoration work the hall looked very pleasing. Music which had plenty of "pep” in it was contributed by a Swiss orchestra comprising Mrs. Schneller (Lowgarth) piano, Mrs. Gopperth (Cardiff) piano and Messrs. A. Engelberger and F. Schuler (Kapuni) accordeons. Extras were ac-. cordeon miisic by Messrs. N. Meuli and J. -Kuchleii. As master of ceremonies Mr. J. Steiner, junr.- (Alahoe) carried Out his duties satisfactorily. -'Admirable supper arrangements were .'made by a committee consisting of Mesdames A. T. Behl, D. Meier, M. Steiner, M. Mason,,A. Wyss, R. Fischer, F. Steiner, J. Schumackcr, W. Butter, J. Schupfer and F. Zimmerman, assisted by a host of willing helpers. Prizes for novelty dances were awarded as follows: Monte Carlo waltz, Mrs. Schupfer and. Mr. C. Yost; Monte Carlo one-step, Mrs. Kaiser and Mr. K. Leuthard 1, Mrs. Hurliman and Mr. E. Perrott 2; spot waltz, Miss E. Fischer and Mr. C. Sollicker. Mr, L. C. Dahinder thanked those present. r their support to the function, and the committee for the splendid success of the evening. The committee thht organised the function consisted. of. Messrs. J. Steiner, junr, (secretary), A,.Sollicker, J. Hiestand, D. Meier, J. Steiner (Cardiff) and A. Wyss,, FIRE BPJGADE BUSINESS. The monthly meeting of the fire brigade was held on Tuesday evening, Superintendent A. Melville presiding over an attendance of 11 members. Mr. T. J. Watts, secretary of the United Eire Brigades’ Association, wrote stating that the usual grant and privileges for the annual demonstration and conference would not be given this year by tho Government, It was decided to support the association’s renewal of its request for the grant. ' The superintendent welcomed a new member, Mr. G. Davies. Tho superintendent brought up the question of smoking in the town hall during entertainments and said that on a recent occasion some of the brigade members were the worst offenders. He asked for their co-operation in preventing smoking. The town board having asked that firemen on duty at the pictures should appear in dress uniform and not in caps only, it was decided that firemen be asked to carry out the recommendation.

•EUCHRE TOUPvNAMENT. The fourth night of tho series of the combined football and band euchre parties took place in the parish hall on Tuesday when in spite of the counterattraction in the town hall about .40 players took part, the tourney being under the control of Messrs. Ken Williams and R. Pascoe. The ladies’ prize for the evening, a 50lb bag of flour, was won by Mrs. R. E. Williams, and the men’s, a pair of slippers, by Air. G. Neville. PERSONAL. .Messrs. J. A. Dawson and T. B. Merson left by the mail train on Alonday for Wellington to attend the Maori v. Britain football match. Air. L. Heydon, who was injured in the Kaponga.-Patea junior football match at Patea on Saturday, necessitating his removal .to, hospital, has sufficiently recovered to return home, Mrs. Bertie and hoi’ mother, Airs. W. Simes, . are. "visiting Wanganui, where Airs. Simes is undergoing treatment for eye trouble.
