INCURRED DEBT BY FRAUD

One month's hard labour was imposed on Janies McFarlane Williamson, aged 33, when ho admitted to the Magistrate at New Plymouth yesterday that on June 24 at Rahotu while incurring a debt with Edwin Dudley Whittle for £1 2s he obtained credit by means of fraud. Detective Meiklejohn said Williamson went to Whittle’s hotel. He said he was going to work for a man named Wright. After incurring a debt for board he moved on round the mountain and was later arrested. “I have -nothing to say,” said Williamson. He explained that he did have a job to go to at Wright’s place. He was waiting for his luggage to arrive. On the Friday, when he telephoned Wright, he found another man had been engaged, “This action was taken because of the evidence of system,” eaid the detective. Williamson, he said, was before the court on June 23, having already run up £2 for board after telling the boardinghouse proprietress he was still engaged at Rahotu. He was released on a charge of false pretences and ordered to come up for sentence later. He went to Oakura and stayed there and then moved on to Rahotu. On June 27 he paid 5s for board at the Opunake Hotel and stayed there till the thirteenth. Next ha went to the Eltham Railway Hotel and afterwards to j'.flidhirst, where ho incurred £2 10s for board after representing that he had a job to go to.
